HCIL: Hierarchical Class Incremental Learning for Longline Fishing Visual Monitoring

open access: yes2022 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), 2022
The goal of electronic monitoring of longline fishing is to visually monitor the fish catching activities on fishing vessels based on cameras, either for regulatory compliance or catch counting. The previous hierarchical classification method demonstrates efficient fish species identification of catches from longline fishing, where fishes are under ...

Deep-water longline fishing has reduced impact on Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems. [PDF]

open access: yesSci Rep, 2014
Bottom trawl fishing threatens deep-sea ecosystems, modifying the seafloor morphology and its physical properties, with dramatic consequences on benthic communities. Therefore, the future of deep-sea fishing relies on alternative techniques that maintain the health of deep-sea ecosystems and tolerate appropriate human uses of the marine environment. In

Development of an Automatic Robot To Save Labor in Longline Fishing

open access: yes, 2023
Most of the fishing currently practiced in Japan is done by small vessels with a small number of fishermen (one or two). One of the most common fishing methods is longline fishing. However, this method requires the vessel to operate at a constant low speed because the depth of the hook must be kept constant while adjusting the speed of the fishing boat

Optical Characteristics of Snood in Tuna Longline Fishing.

open access: yesNIPPON SUISAN GAKKAISHI, 1991
The luminance and the spectral luminance from different snood materials in tuna longline fishing were measured to compare their optical characteristics with the background luminance constant. The luminance variation coefficient and inherent contrast of the zinc-plated wire were several times larger than that of nylon monofilament.

Absolute 3d Pose Estimation and Length Measurement of Severely Deformed Fish from Monocular Videos in Longline Fishing [PDF]

open access: yesICASSP 2021 - 2021 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP), 2021
Monocular absolute 3D fish pose estimation allows for efficient fish length measurement in the longline fisheries, where fishes are under severe deformation during the catching process. This task is challenging since it requires locating absolute 3D fish keypoints based on a short monocular video clip.

Disentangling the complexity of tropical small-scale fisheries dynamics using supervised Self-Organizing Maps.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Tropical small-scale fisheries are typical for providing complex multivariate data, due to their diversity in fishing techniques and highly diverse species composition.

Relative Impacts of Simultaneous Stressors on a Pelagic Marine Ecosystem

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2019
Climate change and fishing are two of the greatest anthropogenic stressors on marine ecosystems. We investigate the effects of these stressors on Hawaii’s deep-set longline fishery for bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) and the ecosystem which supports it ...

Using models of social transmission to examine the spread of longline depredation behavior among sperm whales in the Gulf of Alaska. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Fishing, farming and ranching provide opportunities for predators to prey on resources concentrated by humans, a behavior termed depredation. In the Gulf of Alaska, observations of sperm whales depredating on fish caught on demersal longline gear dates ...

Analysis of the fishing effort of the Mexican longline tuna fleet operating in the Gulf of Mexico in 2004

open access: yesCiencias Marinas, 2010
The Gulf of Mexico yellowfin tuna (YFT) longline fishing effort for 2004 was analyzed. The data used to describe the longline characteristics and estimate the catch efficiency of the vessels (catch in number of organisms per trip) were obtained from ...
