An overview of longshore sediment transport on the Brazilian coast

Regional Studies in Marine Science, 2020
Abstract The present study investigates the wave behavior and the longshore sediment transport rate on the Brazilian continental shelf, using a computational model and four different formulations, for the period between 1979–2015. The average significant wave height is substantially variable along the study region, with the largest values occurring ...

Longshore sediment transport estimation using a fuzzy inference system

open access: yesApplied Ocean Research, 2008
Accurate prediction of longshore sediment transport in the nearshore zone is essential for control of shoreline erosion and beach evolution. In this paper, a hybrid Adaptive-Network-Based FUZZY Inference System (ANFIS), Fuzzy Inference System (FIS), CERC, Walton-Bruno (WB) and Van Rijn (VR) formulae are used to predict and model longshore sediment ...

Vertical distribution of longshore sediment transport on barred macrotidal beaches, northern France

open access: yesContinental Shelf Research, 2015
International audienceThe vertical distribution of longshore sediment transport was measured on sandy macrotidal barred beaches of Northern France under low to moderate wave energy conditions, using streamer traps collecting sand at different elevations ...

Episodicity in Longshore Sediment Transport

Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering, 1985
Seven West Coast sites are selected having from one to three years of nearshore directional wave measurements several times a day during the period 1979–82. Time series of daily net longshore transport are estimated using the energy flux method, based upon measured Sxy. Investigations are made on frequency and cumulative distributions of transport, and

Assessment of Longshore Sediment Transport Using LITPACK

The International Conference on scientific innovations in Science, Technology, and Management, 2023
The coastal zone has become one of the most important activity zones in the world as it is thickly populated and has several industries and other establishments. Development activities in the coastal zone must be systematic within the framework of well-defined Coastal Zone Management Plans.

A Formula for Longshore Sediment Transport in the Swash

Coastal Sediments '07, 2007
A formula is proposed for the longshore sediment transport in the swash based on the study by Larson et al. on swash-zone transport and foreshore evolution. Hydrodynamics needed to predict the local transport rate were derived from ballistics theory, where both the cases with and without friction were investigated.

Measuring and modelling longshore sediment transport

Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, 2009
Field measurements of longshore sediment transport (LST) was undertaken on barred and non-barred beaches composed of fine, medium and coarse sands in Brazil, Denmark and Portugal. Measurements and predictions of vertical suspended sediment concentration profiles (C-Profiles) and cross-shore hydrodynamic parameters were then combined in a new semi ...

Calculation of longshore sediment transport

Oceanology, 2014
Calculation approaches to longshore transport of sandy sediments are discussed. The estimation of the total sediment transport rate is shown to be possibly based on the so-called CERC formula, where the proportionality factor K should be calculated from relationships of Bayram et al. [8] or Leont’yev [4].

Longshore Current and Sediment Transport on Beaches

Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering, 2007
A numerical model based on the time-averaged continuity, cross-shore momentum, longshore momentum, and energy equations is developed to predict the cross-shore variations of the mean and standard deviation of the free surface elevation and depth-averaged cross-shore and longshore velocities under obliquely incident irregular breaking waves.

Longshore sediment transport on non-planar beaches

Coastal Engineering, 1983
Abstract For a concave-up 2 3 power Bruun beach profile, the following two energetics-based sediment transport models are developed: (1) a Bagnold-type model and (2) a combined wave-current stress model. The stress model is calibrated with the Bagnold model using observed transport rates on planar beaches.
