Numerical analysis of a longwall mining cycle and development of a composite longwall index

International Journal of Rock Mechanics and Minings Sciences, 2016
Abstract Longwall mining is the most profitable and safe coal extraction method from deep seated deposits. Understanding the interaction between powered supports, surrounding rock and coal strata is the key for successful operation. In this respect, numerical modelling techniques provide great insight into the behaviour of shield support especially ...

An approach to automated longwall mining

15th Annual Meeting and Technical Display, 1979
The longwall system of mining coal, providing advantages in the areas of productivity as well as health and safety, is described, and technological developments leading to a full automation of the system are discussed. In the longwall system large blocks of coal (up to 600 feet wide and up to 5000 feet long) are developed, with each block mined out by ...

Modelling of Longwall Coal Mining

2020 International Conference on Mathematics and Computers in Science and Engineering (MACISE), 2020
Increasing the productivity of longwall coal mining in underground mining of thick methane-bearing coal seams is an important problem. To solve this problem a mathematical model and a simulation model of the longwall coal mining operation were developed.

Longwall and caving mining methods

1985
The essential geomechanical features of longwall and caving methods of mining were outlined in Chapter 12. Longwall and caving methods are distinguished from other mining methods by the fact that the near-field rock undergoes large displacements so that mined voids become self-filling.

Physical model study of a longwall mine

Mining Science and Technology, 1985
Abstract In this study a new physical model for longwall mining is developed combining features of the ‘sandbox’ model with a new concept for excavation of mine openings using a special tool. The model is used to examine stress distributions around a longwall face in chain pillars as well as in the panel.
