Tails of Biodiversity: Vertebrate Community Assessment in a Neotropical River Basin via eDNA Metabarcoding

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 1, January–February 2026.
This study used environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding to assess vertebrate biodiversity in headwater streams of the Rio Santo Antônio basin, southeastern Brazil, a tributary of the Rio Doce. A total of 119 vertebrate OTUs were identified, with oxidation–reduction potential emerging as the strongest environmental predictor of species richness.

Fish, Passa Cinco stream, Corumbataí River basin, state of São Paulo, Brazil [PDF]

open access: yesCheck List, 2009
The fishes of the present study were collected in Passa Cinco stream, a main river of Corumbataí River basin, Tietê drainage. Five sites were selected in that stream, downstream from headwater to its mouth, and six samplings were performed using the ...

Endoparasites of Hypostomus commersoni (Siluriformes, Loricariidae) from two shallow lagoons, Argentina

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Biological Sciences, 2022
Hypostomus commersoni is a freshwater fish, native to the Paraná River basin, which plays an important role in trophic networks of this system. This study aimed at analyzing the structure of the endohelminth community of H.

Morphometric Traits, Length–Weight Dynamics and Condition Indices of Invasive Vermiculated Sailfin Catfish (Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus) in Bangladesh: Management Implications

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 5, Issue 6, December 2025.
ABSTRACT The vermiculated sailfin catfish (Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus), an invasive species, has rapidly proliferated in Bangladesh's freshwater ecosystems, threatening native biodiversity. This study examined its morphometric traits, length–weight dynamics, condition factors and relative weight over a one‐year period (August 2023–July 2024) in the ...

Hypostomus chrysostiktos, a new species of armored catfish (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from rio Paraguaçu, Bahia State, Brazil

open access: yesNeotropical Ichthyology
Hypostomus chrysostiktos, a new species of armored catfish of the family Loricariidae, is described. The most remarkable characteristic of the new species, which allows its prompt diagnosis from congeners, is the high number of branched rays in the ...

The Ecological Memory of Fish Assemblages in Tropical Agroecosystems With Different History of Landscape Changes

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 70, Issue 12, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Environmental changes can have persistent effects on the local and regional dynamics of multispecies assemblages. However, the extent of historical legacies on current diversity patterns may depend on the trajectory and intensity of the environmental change. Here, we investigate how persistent decadal land use and land cover (LULC) changes are

Karyotypic diversity and evolutionary trends in the Neotropical catfish genus Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803 (Teleostei, Siluriformes, Loricariidae)

open access: yesComparative Cytogenetics, 2012
The family Loricariidae with 813 nominal species is one of the largest fish families of the world. Hypostominae, its more complex subfamily, was recently divided into five tribes. The tribe Hypostomini is composed of a single genus, Hypostomus Lacé

Local Environmental Variables Predict Fish Species Richness and Composition in Sand Beaches of a Neotropical River

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, Volume 41, Issue 9, Page 1949-1958, November 2025.
ABSTRACT Local and regional species diversity is influenced by historical factors, resource availability, biotic interactions, the presence of resources, and adequate environmental conditions. We evaluated the effects of local environmental variables and spatial structure on fish species richness and composition along sandy beaches of a Neotropical ...
