Photonic Time Crystals and Time‐Varying Electromagnetic Metamatter: A New Direction for Ultrafast Tunable Photonic and Microwave Materials and Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Photonic time crystals (PTCs) are systems in which electromagnetic parameters are modulated periodically in time, producing momentum bandgaps via temporal scattering rather than spatial Bragg processes. This review examines the theoretical frameworks, modeling, and computational tools for time‐varying media, and summarizes experimental demonstrations ...

Lossless compression for laser additive manufacturing using continuous rows compressed storage [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Intelligent Manufacturing and Special Equipment
Purpose – The layer section of laser additive manufacturing (AM) can be rasterized. Subsequently, the rasterized layer section can be converted into sparse matrix. However, large storage space is occupied due to the high manufacturing resolution.

Lossless Astronomical Image Compression and the Effects of Noise

open access: yes, 2009
We compare a variety of lossless image compression methods on a large sample of astronomical images and show how the compression ratios and speeds of the algorithms are affected by the amount of noise in the images.

Realization of a Bilayer Elastic Topological Insulator

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Bilayer elastic wave topological insulators are experimentally realized, introducing the layer degree of freedom to access four topological phases. This enables diverse domain walls and transmission behaviors, including interlayer conversion and beam splitting.

Lossless quantum data compression and variable-length coding

open access: yes, 2002
In order to compress quantum messages without loss of information it is necessary to allow the length of the encoded messages to vary. We develop a general framework for variable-length quantum messages in close analogy to the classical case and show ...

Autonomous Recognition of Retained Secretions in Central‐Airway Based on Deep Learning for Adult Patients Receiving Invasive Mechanical Ventilation

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This work presents a deep learning model to autonomously recognize and classify the secretion retention into three levels for patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation, achieving 89.08% accuracy. This model can be implemented to ventilators by edge computing, whose feasibility is approved.
