Cellular low-dose effects of ionizing radiation.

Rivista di biologia, 2009
The most important physical quantity used to define the deposition of energy in organs and tissues from ionizing radiation is the absorbed dose, but this measure does not characterize the fluctuation of energy absorption resulting from the stochastic nature of the energy deposition events in individual cells.

Response of Biological Systems to Low Doses of Ionizing Radiation

Health Physics, 2016
Radiation is ubiquitous in the environment. Biological effects of exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation are subjected to several modulating factors. Two of these, bystander response and adaptive protections, are discussed briefly.

Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation at Low Dose and Low Dose Rate

Radiation Research, 1981
A few decades ago the principal concern in radiation protection was the mutagenic potential of ionizing radiation, and extensive research programs using laboratory plants and animals provided dose-response relationships that were assumed to be linear at low dose and could be used for setting radiation exposure standards for human populations.

Low dose or low dose rate ionizing radiation-induced health effect in the human

Journal of Environmental Radioactivity, 2018
The extensive literature review on human epidemiological studies suggests that low dose ionizing radiation (LDIR) (≤100 mSv) or low dose rate ionizing radiation (LDRIR) (

Radiation hormesis: Stimulatory effects of low doses ionizing radiation

Geriatrics & Gerontology International, 2004
Low to small doses of ionizing radiation conditionally show stimulatory effects in various cells and organisms, contrasting with detrimental effects induced at high doses. Radiation hormesis is defined as biopositive health effects, such as augmentation of growth and survival, enhancement of immune response, suppression of mutagenesis, and increase in ...

Epigenetic Responses to Low Dose Ionizing Radiation

Free Radical Biology and Medicine, 2018
Two epigenetically regulated subsets of genes that potentially link environmental exposures early in development to adult diseases are imprinted genes and those with metastable epialleles. Genes with metastable epialleles have highly variable expressions because of stochastic allelic modifications in the epigenome.

Carcinogenesis in Laboratory Mice after Low Doses of Ionizing Radiation

Radiation Research, 2003
Experimental data on the incidence of solid tumors from various long-term mouse studies performed at the Casaccia laboratories over several years were reconsidered, limiting the analysis to the results available for doses equal to or less than 17 cGy of neutrons and 32 cGy of X rays since these dose limits are reasonably close to the generally accepted

Reduced Oxygen Enhancement Ratio at Low Doses of Ionizing Radiation

Radiation Research, 1984
A decreased oxygen enhancement ratio (OER) at lower radiation doses has been previously reported (B. Palcic, J. W. Brosing, and L. D. Skarsgard, Br. J. Cancer 46, 980-984 (1984]. The question remained whether or not this effect is due to a possible oxygen contamination at low doses, which was not the case at high doses. To ensure a sufficient degree of

T Cell Potentiation by Low Dose Ionizing Radiation

Health Physics, 1990
The phenomenon of a stimulatory response induced by an exposure to a low dose of an otherwise toxic agent has been observed in a wide variety of organisms, ranging from the simplest prokaryotes to higher eukaryotes and with a spectrum of stimuli. This would suggest that the phenomenon is evolutionarily conserved and biologically important.

Estimates of the Hazard of Low Doses of Ionizing Radiation

IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science, 1980
Classical radiation epidemiology has failed to provide firm estimates of the risks attendant to low level radiation exposure and it is unlikely to do this in the future. However, if human data are examined in the light of theoretical and experimental radiobiology, consistent patterns emerge that permit better estimates.
