The trigger mechanism of low-frequency earthquakes on Montserrat [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, 2006
A careful analysis of low-frequency seismic events on Soufrieere Hills volcano, Montserrat, points to a source mechanism that is non-destructive, repetitive, and has a stationary source location. By combining these seismological clues with new field evidence and numerical magma flow modelling, we propose a seismic trigger model which is based on ...

Low‐frequency earthquakes in the Mexican Sweet Spot [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2013
AbstractWe use data from the Meso‐America Subduction Experiment to detect and locate low‐frequency earthquakes (LFEs) in the Mexican subduction zone. We use visually‐identified templates to perform a network waveform correlation search that produced ~17,000 robustly detected LFEs that form 15 distinct families.

Moment-duration scaling of Low-Frequency Earthquakes in Guerrero, Mexico [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 2020
Low-frequency earthquakes (LFEs) are detected within tremor, as small, repetitive, impulsive low-frequency (1-8 Hz) signals. While the mechanism causing this depletion of the high frequency content of their signal is still debated, this feature may indicate that the source processes at the origin of LFEs are different from those for regular earthquakes.

EARTHQUAKE PREDICTION EVALUATION BASED ON VLF DATA USING A NOVEL INTERSECTION-UNION METHOD [PDF]

open access: yesISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences, 2021
Electromagnetic phenomena, especially those in the Very Low Frequency/Low Frequency (VLF/LF) bands are promising for short-term earthquake prediction. Seismo-ionospheric perturbations cause a variety of changes in different receiver-transmitter VLF/LF ...

Scaling of Repeating Earthquakes at the Transition From Aseismic to Seismic Slip

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2023
Some observations of repeating earthquakes show an unusual, non‐self‐similar scaling between seismic moment and corner frequency, a source property related to rupture size.

A Model for Low‐Frequency Earthquake Slip [PDF]

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, 2017
AbstractUsing high‐resolution relative low‐frequency earthquake (LFE) locations, we calculate the patch areas (Ap) of LFE families. During episodic tremor and slip (ETS) events, we define AT as the area that slips during LFEs and ST as the total amount of summed LFE slip.

Décollement geometry controls on shallow very low frequency earthquakes [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
AbstractRecent studies have documented the occurrence of shallow very low frequency earthquakes (VLFE) in subduction zones. The heterogeneity of the materials or stresses that act on the plate interface results in the variable slip rate. Stress on the décollement can be controlled by the décollement geometry and the regional stress, which is also able ...
