Low‐frequency earthquakes at the southern Cascadia margin [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2015
AbstractWe use seismic waveform data from the Mendocino Experiment to detect low‐frequency earthquakes (LFEs) beneath Northern California during the April 2008 tremor‐and‐slip episode. In southern Cascadia, 59 templates were generated using iterative network cross correlation and stacking and grouped into 34 distinct LFE families.

A Nonextensive Statistical Physics Analysis of the 1995 Kobe, Japan Earthquake [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This paper presents an analysis of the distribution of earthquake magnitudes for the period 1990–1998 in a broad area surrounding the epicenter of the 1995 Kobe earthquake.

Identification of Electromagnetic Pre-Earthquake Perturbations from the DEMETER Data by Machine Learning

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2020
The low-altitude satellite DEMETER recorded many cases of ionospheric perturbations observed on occasion of large seismic events. In this paper, we explore 16 spot-checking classification algorithms, among which, the top classifier with low-frequency ...

Seismic Vulnerability Assessment of Low-Rise Reinforced Concrete Buildings Affected by the 2015 Gorkha, Nepal, Earthquake [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Low-rise reinforced concrete (RC) frames with brick masonry infill walls up to five stories high have been used for housing construction in Nepal since the late 1980s. Many buildings of this type were damaged and/or collapsed in the 25 April 2015 Gorkha

Hybrid Ground Motion Simulation for the 2013 ML 6.4 Ruisui, Taiwan Earthquake

open access: yesTerrestrial, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, 2016
The 2013 ML 6.4 Ruisui earthquake struck a seismic gap around the northern part of the Longitudinal Valley where rare earthquakes have occurred for at least two decades.

Applying the Coulomb Failure Function with an optimally oriented plane to the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake triggering [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The Coulomb failure function (CFF) quantitatively describes static stress changes in secondary faults near the source fault of an earthquake. CFF can be employed to monitor how static stress transfers and then shed some light on the probability of ...

VLF/LF Radio Sounding of Ionospheric Perturbations Associated with Earthquakes

open access: yesSensors, 2007
It is recently recognized that the ionosphere is very sensitive to seismic effects, and the detection of ionospheric perturbations associated with earthquakes, seems to bevery promising for short-term earthquake prediction. We have proposed a possible use

Identifying significant earthquake intensity measures for evaluating seismic damage and fragility of nuclear power plant structures

open access: yesNuclear Engineering and Technology, 2020
Seismic design practices and seismic response analyses of civil structures and nuclear power plants (NPPs) have conventionally used the peak ground acceleration (PGA) or spectral acceleration (Sa) as an intensity measure (IM) of an earthquake.

Low‐Frequency Earthquakes and Pore Pressure Transients in Subduction Zones [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2018
AbstractLow‐frequency earthquakes (LFEs) have been observed in subduction zones and some major tectonic faults and may well be the most important constituents of tectonic tremors. In subduction zones, they were initially attributed to fluids released by dehydration reactions in downgoing slabs.
