Magnetic Braking in Neutron Star Low Mass X-Ray Binaries

2021
In this thesis, we investigate the effectiveness of theoretical descriptions of angular momentum loss in stars due to the presence of magnetic fields, a process commonly known as magnetic braking. The most widely used description of magnetic braking is the so-called Skumanich prescription, which can effectively describe the angular momentum evolution ...

Neutron Stars in Low-mass X-ray Binaries

2022
Neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) accrete matter from geometrically thin disks fed by their low-mass com- panions. Observations of neutron stars in LMXBs indicate three different rotational phases: (1) at high X-ray luminosities, Lx, mass flows from the disk on to the star while the rotation speed of the neutron star increases, (2) at ...

Magnetic fields of neutron stars in low mass X-ray binaries

Astronomical & Astrophysical Transactions, 1999
Abstract We report detailed radiation transport calculations which show that the shape of the 1–30 keV continuum spectrum of a weakly magnetic accreting neutron star depends on the strength of its magnetic field. We use this dependence to estimate the magnetic fields of several accreting neutron stars in LMXBs.

Overview of QPOs in neutron-star low-mass X-ray binaries

Advances in Space Research, 2006
Abstract Some aspects of the rapid X-ray variability of low magnetic-field neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries are briefly summarized.
