Low-temperature toughness of direct quenched offshore steel

Materials Research Innovations, 2015
AbstractThe ductile-to-brittle transition of direct quenched and tempered martensite begins at 243 K, and the impact energy of the superficial region of the steel plate decreases from 104 J (243 K) to 50 J (213 K). In contrast, the ductile-to-brittle transition of bainite begins at room temperature.

Low-Temperature Toughness of the Austempered Offshore Steel

Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 2016
This study investigates low-temperature toughness of the offshore steel with two different austempering heat treatments. Toughness of upper bainite is significantly lower than that of lower bainite. Low impact toughness of the upper bainite is caused by the presence of martensite–austenite (MA) and increasing the amount of low-angle lath boundaries in ...

Enhanced low-temperature impact toughness of nanostructured Ti

Applied Physics Letters, 2006
Impact toughness is one of the major mechanical properties for structural materials. It is generally observed that in coarse-grained materials the impact toughness decreases with decreasing testing temperature. Here, we report that the impact toughness of nanostructured Ti processed by severe plastic deformation is enhanced at low temperatures of −70°C

Low temperature impact toughness of high strength structural steel

Thin-Walled Structures, 2018
Abstract Impact toughness properties of four kinds of high strength steel (HSS) were investigated with the nominal yield strength 460, 690, 800 and 960 MPa, respectively. The specialty of impact toughness among base metal, heat affected zone (HAZ) and weld metal were also compared and discussed.

Low temperature fracture toughness of polysulfide modified BPA-epoxide primers

Progress in Organic Coatings, 2022
Abstract A mixture of amidoamine and polysulfide crosslinkers were used to toughen a BPA-epoxide primer. Viscoelastic properties, fracture toughness, impact resistance, adhesion strength, corrosion properties were investigated. Fracture toughness study was conducted at ambient and low temperatures to approximate an aircraft at altitude.

Impact toughness of austenitic steels at low temperatures

Metal Science and Heat Treatment, 1967
1. If austenite undergoes no change in the impact test than the impact toughness decreases monotonically with decreasing temperatures. 2. The martensite forming during the test increases the work of formation of the crack but reduces the work of its propagation. The curves of the impact toughness have peaks.

Determining the Low-Temperature Fracture Toughness of Asphalt Mixtures

Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 2002
There has been a sustained effort in applying fracture mechanics concepts to crack formation and propagation in bituminous pavement materials. Adequate fracture resistance is an essential requirement for asphalt pavements built in the northern part of the United States and Canada, for which the prevailing failure mode is cracking due to low ...

Low-Temperature Fracture Toughness Estimates for Very High Strength Steels

International Journal of Offshore and Polar Engineering, 2016
The lack of design rules limits the application of Very High Strength Steels (VHSS). One critical point limiting their use lies in their poorly documented low-temperature fracture properties in relation to more conventional steels. The two major concepts governing the assessment of steel construction codes are the Master Curve (MC) methodology and the ...

Tough and Antifreezing MXene@Au Hydrogel for Low-Temperature Trimethylamine Gas Sensing

ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 2022
Trimethylamine (TMA) is one of the important chemical indexes to judge the freshness of marine fish. It is necessary to develop a low temperature TMA sensor to help the monitoring and prediction of the quality of marine fish in cold chain. Herein, a flexible low temperature TMA gas sensor featuring antifreezing and superior mechanical properties was ...
