World's fastest 10 000‐m breakthrough: The XY‐22 well redefines deep‐earth access in the Tarim Basin

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The Tarim Basin in northwestern China hosts one of the world's deepest petroleum systems, exemplified by the XY‐22 ultra‐deep well (bottom depth: 11 116 m; ~220°C, ~145 MPa). This study integrates tectonic mapping, geological cross‐sections, ultraviolet fluorescence microscopy, and optical photothermal infrared (OPTIR) spectroscopy to characterize ...

Modeling and monitoring injectivity evolution during cold CO2 injection with field evidence from aquistore carbon capture and storage operations

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This work integrates 5 years of field data from the Aquistore CCS project with a non‐isothermal THM modeling framework to explain how cold CO2 injection alters injectivity over time. The study shows that sustained cooling near the wellbore reduces effective stresses, promotes tensile micro‑cracking, and leads to semi‑reversible permeability enhancement

Lower Cambrian cavity-dwelling endolithic (boring) sponges

open access: yes, 1981
In the Lower Cambrian Forteau Formation (middle Bonnia–Olenellus zone) of southern Labrador, cavities in archaeocyath patch reefs contain preserved coelobiontic endolithic sponges.

An early Cambrian agglutinated tubular lophophorate with brachiopod characters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The morphological disparity of lophotrochozoan phyla makes it difficult to predict the morphology of the last common ancestor. Only fossils of stem groups can help discover the morphological transitions that occurred along the roots of these phyla. Here,

Discovery of high‐quality Cambrian source rocks in China's first 10 000‐m‐deep well

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Well SDTK1 penetrated the Lower Cambrian Yurtus Formation at 10 851–10 910 m in the Tarim Basin, providing the first direct drilling evidence of effective marine source rocks below 10 km. Despite overmature thermal evolution, the lower argillaceous interval retains an average total organic carbon of 4.3% and an average S1 + S2 value of 3.8 mg/g ...

Moulting in the lobopodian Onychodictyon from the lower Cambrian of Greenland [Elektronisk resurs]

open access: yes, 2013
A number of lobopodian taxa from the Cambrian display pairs of sclerotized plates symmetrically positioned along the dorsum of the animal, predominantly above the walking appendages.

Orthodentine‐osteodentine and osteocytic‐anosteocytic transition inferred from Silurian stem chondrichthyan dermal jawbones with ever‐white teeth overgrown by brown denticles

open access: yesDevelopmental Dynamics, EarlyView.
Abstract Background The dentigerous jawbones of a 423‐million‐year‐old stem chondrichthyan (ischnacanthid acanthodian) carry a characteristic combination of multi‐row non‐shedding white teeth with brownish overgrowing denticles. The color distinction makes it a good model for observing the interaction between two odontode lineages, but the nature of ...

Automated segmentation of postsurgical resection cavities on magnetic resonance imaging in focal epilepsy: A Multicentre Epilepsy Lesion Detection study

open access: yesEpilepsia, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective Quantitative assessment of extent of tissue resection following epilepsy surgery requires accurate delineation of the resection cavity on postoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Current methods for resection cavity masking are time‐consuming and labor‐intensive, and existing automated approaches exhibit variable segmentation ...

Trilobites and intercontinental tie points in the Upper Cambrian of Scandinavia

open access: yesGeologica Acta, 2003
The Upper Cambrian faunas of Scandinavia are generally dominated by olenid trilobites, which provide a firm basis for the biostratigraphic classification. The olenids tend, however, to be provincial and facies controlled.
