Palaeontological survey of the Neogene littoral deposits of the Namaqualand coastal strip, Northern Cape Province, South Africa, has resulted in the collection of the first Lower Miocene faunas from South Africa. Among the mammals from Ryskop and Hondeklip Bay is a gorilla-sized hominoid.
