Aspect ratio dependence of heat transfer and large-scale flow in turbulent convection

open access: yes, 2010
The heat transport and corresponding changes in the large-scale circulation (LSC) in turbulent Rayleigh-B\'{e}nard convection are studied by means of three-dimensional direct numerical simulations as a function of the aspect ratio $\Gamma$ of a closed ...

Insight into the Internal Structure of Biogenic, Synthetic and Geological Apatite by Electron Microscopy and X‐Ray Scattering

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Apatite occurs in many forms in nature, e.g. in teeth and geological minerals. Internally, biological apatite contains nanocrystals that are also found in synthetically prepared calcium phosphate nanoparticles which are used in biomedicine, e.g. for gene and drug delivery and for bone regeneration. Abstract Calcium phosphate is the inorganic component (

Random lsc functions

open access: yes, 2000
An ergodic theorem for random lsc functions is obtained by relying on a (novel) 'scalarization' of such functions. In the process, Kolmogorov's extension theorem for randon lsc functions is established. Applications to statistical estimation problems, composite materials and stochastic optimization problems are briefly noted.

Bioinspired Polypeptide Dendrimer‐Modified Thin‐Film Composite Membranes for Selective Lithium‐Magnesium Separation with DFT Insights

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We fabricated a biomimetic dendrimer‐modified thin‐film nanocomposite membrane with a coordination‐assisted ion‐selective interface. pH‐responsive polypeptide sites preferentially bind Mg2+ and promote Li+ permeation, as predicted by density functional theory calculations of metal‐ligand interactions.

Effects of Calcium-Channel Noise on Dynamics of Excitation-Contraction Coupling in Paced Cardiac Cells

open access: yesDiscrete Dynamics in Nature and Society, 2013
We study a simple discrete model with the impact of calcium-channel noise on the beat-to-beat dynamics of cardiac cells. The effects of the noise are assessed by bifurcation analysis and power spectrum analysis, respectively.

Spin‐Selective Anti‐Perovskite Enables Breakthrough Nitrate‐to‐Ammonia Electrocatalysis

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
CuNCo3 antiperovskite leverages built‐in 3d–3d interactions to stabilize and generate spin‐selective Co sites during nitrate reduction. Multiple operando techniques reveal that Cu acts as a promoter, inducing partial surface Co‐N cleavage and Cu‐Co charge redistribution.
