Shear‐Induced Emergence of Aromatic Superlow‐Friction Interfaces in Amorphous Carbon: Triggering Chemical Impurities and Atomic‐Scale Mechanisms

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
High‐throughput quantum‐mechanical simulations reveal that amorphous carbon undergoes shear‐driven structural transformation into aromatic, graphene‐like interfaces. This mechanochemical process is governed by dopant chemistry: dopants with valency less than four promote the emergence of superlow‐friction amorphous graphene, whereas tetra‐valent ...

A Piezo‐Mimetic Ionic Hydrogel Harnessing Joint Motion for Cartilage Repair

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A piezo‐mimetic ionic hydrogel converts mechanical deformation into bioactive ionic currents via stress‐induced asymmetric ion migration. Coupled with sustained Mg2+ release, this mechano‐electrochemical platform bridges mechanical loading and cellular signaling, enabling load‐adaptive stimulation and enhanced cartilage regeneration. ABSTRACT Articular

Methodology for measurement of lubricant decay rate for rail lubricants

open access: yes, 2008
A tribologist's dream is to predict the point at which a lubricant film will fail. The\ud precursor to this ideal situation is to predict the decay behaviour of a lubricant film prior to failure.

Mastication‐Induced Electrical Stimulation Activates Prg4+ Chondroprogenitors for Osteoarthritis Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study presents a ″trash‐to‐treasure″ strategy that converts harmful joint overloads into beneficial electrical cues. The biodegradable MagPie, by providing piezoelectrical stimulation and releasing Mg2+ during mastication, exerts synergistic pro‐regenerative and anti‐inflammatory effects on Prg4+ cells via the ECM‐mediated FAK‐PI3K‐Akt axis ...

Hierarchical Twin Networks Enable Exceptional Strength and Fracture Toughness in Titanium

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A commercial‐purity titanium with hierarchical ultrafine twin structures delivers an exceptional combination of fracture toughness (KJIc) of 187 MPa·m1/2 and specific yield strength of 140 MPa·cm3·g−1, in which pre‐engineered high‐density twin boundaries stimulate massive and dislocations to blunt crack tip.

Lubricant inerting

open access: yes
The recent development of nitrogen concentrators that can filter a stream of almost pure nitrogen from air now makes it practicable to operate closed lubrication systems in an inert atmosphere to limit lubricant oxidation during use – so called ...
