Nature Physical Science, 1971EXPERIMENTS under a great variety of conditions have shown that iodine is very effective in reducing the friction between sliding metal surfaces. Rowe1,2 has demonstrated that iodine vapour will react with outgassed titanium in a high vacuum system to form Til2, a low friction surface.
