Mechanical Wear and Lubrication
1962Abstract : This report covers work involving some literature survey and preparation of a presentation for the 1962 Educational Series of the American Society for Metals. This presentation covers the nature of mechanical wear and its reduction by lubrication in moving assemblies.

Lubrication Mechanisms and Lubricants
1990Sliding between clean solid surfaces is generally characterized by a high coefficient of friction and severe wear due to the specific properties of the surfaces, such as low hardness, high surface energy, reactivity, and mutual solubility. Clean surfaces readily adsorb traces of foreign substances, such as organic compounds, from the environment.

A Lubrication Number For Mechanical Seals
1992A lubrication number is introduced, which determines the mode of lubrication as a function of the operational conditions under which a contact, for instance, a seal is operating. In the present paper friction experiments are described which were performed on a pin-on-disc machine. The experiments were performed with seal material combinations of carbon

The Fluid Mechanics of Lubrication
Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics, 1973When two surfaces are in contact and move relative to each other, resistance to the motion is encountered, and usually the surfaces are damaged. It is possible by introducing a lubricant between the surfaces to reduce the friction force and to minimize damage to them.

Oxidative Degradation Mechanisms of Lubricants
1986Lubricant degradation under in-service conditions can be often traced to oxidation. Environmental effects under in-service conditions are often recognized to affect the oxidation pathways of lubricants. In this study, environmental factors such as metal catalysts, fuel components, and oxides of nitrogen are studied systematically in a simple oxidation ...
