A systematic review of efficacy on larva debridement in diabetic foot ulcers

open access: yesHealthcare in Low-resource Settings
Larva therapy, also known as maggot therapy, biodebridement, or maggot debridement therapy, involved the application of live fly larva to a patient’s wound for debridement, disinfection, and wound healing.

Analysis of the complete mitochondrial genomes of two forensically important blowfly species: Lucilia caeasar and Lucilia illustris [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Blowfly species of the family Calliphoridae can be used in forensic investigations to estimate the minimum post-mortem interval (PMI¬min). Lucilia caesar and Lucilia illustris (Diptera: Calliphoridae) are closely related and phenotypically similar ...

No genetic differentiation among populations up to 300 km apart in three species of carrion beetles

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 50, Issue 6, Page 953-967, December 2025.
Habitat fragmentation threatens biodiversity by disrupting gene flow; understanding species' dispersal abilities is key to determining whether they are limited by habitat or mobility. Carrion beetles show no significant population genetic structure across up to 320 km, indicating high dispersal ability and unrestricted gene flow.

Evaluation of the efficacy of novel, meat-free and easily sterilisable artificial diet for mass rearing of Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae) larvae for medical applications

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology
Medically significant Lucilia sericata larvae lack a standardised, reproducible, animal tissue-free, and sterilisable diet for rearing. In this study, we developed and evaluated a diet made from dried milk, protein powder, cholesterol, amino acids, and ...

Insect floral visitors vary spatiotemporally and influence fruit production in mango orchards

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 50, Issue 6, Page 1121-1136, December 2025.
Native stingless bees (Tetragonula spp.) were the most abundant flower visitors in mango orchards, and their visitation sharply declined with distance from native vegetation. Hover flies and stingless bees showed complementary spatiotemporal visitation patterns, but hover flies could not fully offset pollination loss deeper in the orchard.

Temperature Requirements of Some Common Forensically Important Blow and Flesh Flies (Diptera) under Laboratory Conditions

open access: yesJournal of Arthropod-Borne Diseases, 2011
Background: The aim of his study was to determine development time and thermal requirements of three myiasis flies including Chrysomya albiceps, Lucilia sericata, and Sarcophaga sp.

Development of bioactive electrospun scaffolds suitable to support skin fibroblasts and release Lucilia sericata maggot excretion/secretion

open access: yesSN Applied Sciences, 2022
Larval therapy has been reported to be beneficial in the treatment of chronic wounds by promoting granulation tissue formation, due to its antimicrobial properties and by degrading necrotic tissue.

The pace and shape of ant ageing

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 100, Issue 5, Page 2071-2083, October 2025.
ABSTRACT Ants have been proposed as good models to study ageing and the effects of extrinsic mortality because of their long lifespans and plasticity of ageing within species. We discuss how age‐dependent extrinsic mortality might influence queen lifespan, and how the effect of age‐independent extrinsic mortality needs further study, accounting for ...
