The vanadium isotopic composition of lunar basalts

open access: yesEarth and Planetary Science Letters, 2019
Abstract We present the first high-precision vanadium (V) isotope data for lunar basalts. Terrestrial magmatic rock measurements can display significant V isotopic fractionation (particularly during (Fe, Ti)oxide crystallisation), but the Earth displays heavy V (i.e. higher 51V/50V) isotopic compositions compared to meteorites.

On the composition of the lunar interior [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research, 1975
There is now abundant geophysical and geochemical evidence suggesting that the moon has a thick plagioclase rich outer shell. This is most easily explained by early and extensive melting of a CaO and Al_2O_3 rich moon followed by fractional crystallization involving plagioclase flotation.

Removal of a constraint on the composition of the lunar interior [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research, 1973
Ringwood and Essene (1970) proposed that the CaO and Al_2O_3 contents of the deep interior of the moon must be less than 6% each. This constraint has been generally accepted and has led to models of the lunar interior that are dominated by ferromagnesium silicates. This constraint is invalid.
