Food and alcohol indulgence, along with tea‐drinking, gambling, and gossip, are integral to a characteristically Sichuanese ethos of ‘life enjoyment’ (xiangshou shenghuo). Beyond mere pleasure, sensory, ludic, and comic experiences temporarily strip participants of both their formal and subjective qualities.
