Key Characteristics and Mechanisms in Ventilator Weaning of Adult Intensive Care Patients—A Qualitative Study With Healthcare Professionals

open access: yesNursing in Critical Care, Volume 31, Issue 6, November 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Weaning from mechanical ventilation appears to be a complex intervention as defined by the Medical Research Council Framework. However, there is a lack of theoretical insights into ventilator weaning, and the underlying causal mechanisms have not yet been uncovered sufficiently.

Osteological correlates of the respiratory and vascular systems in the neural canals of Mesozoic ornithurines Ichthyornis and Janavis

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 309, Issue 10, Page 2725-2738, October 2026.
Abstract In birds, the neural canal houses a variety of anatomical structures including the spinal cord, meninges, spinal vasculature, and respiratory diverticula. Among these, paramedullary diverticula and the extradural dorsal spinal vein may leave behind osteological correlates in the form of pneumatic foramina and fossae, and a bilobed geometry of ...

Anterior Mediastinal Mature Teratoma Presenting With Mediastinal Mass Syndrome in a Six‐Month‐Old Infant: Diagnostic Pitfalls and Anesthetic Challenges

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT An anterior mediastinal mass in infants can present with life‐threatening complications due to airway and vascular compression. We report a six‐month‐old infant with a mature teratoma presenting as mediastinal mass syndrome, highlighting the diagnostic challenges and anesthetic risks involved.

Lung‐Cardiovascular Interactions and Derangements in ARDS

open access: yesComprehensive Physiology, Volume 16, Issue 5, October 2026.
This review proposes an anatomical near‐ and far‐field framework for lung‐cardiovascular interactions in ARDS. Grounded in pathological and biological studies, the evidence spans pulmonary vascular, right ventricular, and systemic endothelial derangements and reviews available evidence for targeted therapies.

Beyond the Heart‐Lung Axis: A Review of the Crosstalk Between the Hemodynamic, Neurohormonal, and Immune Systems in Pulmonary Hypertension

open access: yesComprehensive Physiology, Volume 16, Issue 5, October 2026.
Pulmonary hypertension is driven by dynamic crosstalk beyond the physical connection between the heart and lung, involving neurohormonal systems, immune pathways, and peripheral organs. This review highlights how multisystem signaling contributes to disease progression and may reveal new diagnostic and therapeutic targets.

Axial Connectivity of the Lung Microbiome: A Review of Interorgan Crosstalk

open access: yesComprehensive Physiology, Volume 16, Issue 5, October 2026.
The human microbiome mediates immune homeostasis and metabolic signaling across organs. Beyond the gut‐lung axis, crosstalk between the lung and other organ systems is less recognized. This review assesses the axial connectivity of the lung microbiome across the gut, brain, skin, heart, kidney, and liver.

Sinensetin From Citrus Peel Alleviates LPS‐Induced Acute Pneumonia by Regulating HIF‐1α Signaling Pathway in Mice

open access: yeseFood, Volume 7, Issue 5, October 2026.
In this study, we found that sinensetin can effectively inhibit the inflammatory response and damage of lung cells caused by LPS in vivo and in vitro. This might be caused by the action of sinensetin in regulating the HIF‐1α‐MAPK signaling cascade.

Lung- and Diaphragm-Protective Ventilation [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 2020
Mechanical ventilation can cause acute diaphragm atrophy and injury and this is associated with poor clinical outcomes. While the importance and impact of lung-protective ventilation is widely appreciated and well-established, the concept of diaphragm ...
