Particle Deposition in Lung Upper Airways

Advances in Bioengineering, 1996
Abstract Airborne particles may deposit on airway surfaces upon inhalation and cause lung injury and disease. The severity of injury depends on the amount deposited at a site as well as on the sensitivity of the cells to the dose delivered.

Deposition of Inhaled Particles in Human Lungs

Nature, 1967
IN a recent communication, Davies and Muir1 pointed out that the experimental results from six independent studies of the retention of particles in the human respiratory system fall into two groups, the results of one group indicating higher values for the deposition than the other.

Particle Deposition in Children's Lungs: Theory and Experiment

Journal of Aerosol Medicine, 2005
A mathematical model of inhaled aerosol particle deposition for children is presented and validated with data from two published experimental studies. The model accurately predicts deposition fraction (DF) in children as a function of particle size for particles in the size range 1-3 microns for both sedentary and exercise breathing conditions.

Lung deposition in freshly excised human lungs.

Inhaled particles, 1977
An artificial chest wall was constructed which was large enough to hold a whole excised human lung. this device was connected to a modified Harvard Respirator which was capable of being programmed to produce any reasonable respiration rate. Freshly excised lungs free of any disease and cuts wer placed in the chest wall and challenged with both ...

The Measurement of Antimony Deposits in the Lung

Physics in Medicine & Biology, 1967
The principles of X-ray spectrophotometry are applied to the determination in vivo of antimony deposits in the lungs of industrial workers. The radiation source is Iodine-125, which emits two effectively monochromatic components. The intensity of the beam transmitted through the patient is measured by a scintillation counter and its spectral ...

Lung Deposition and Respirable Mass During Wet Nebulization

Journal of Aerosol Medicine, 2003
For metered dose inhalers (MDIs), high-flow cascade impaction with a United States Pharmacopia (USP) throat provides a useful prediction of in vivo lung and oropharyngeal aerosol deposition. Particles expected to deposit in the lung are included in the "fine particle fraction" measured on the bench.

The Deposition of Labeled Aerosols in Lung Disorders

1980
Regional deposition of aerosols in the human lung is affected by conditions that change the characteristics of the bronchial tree. An important question is whether different airway disorders are characterized by specific patterns of regional deposition of labeled aerosols [1–4]. From experimental work on the penetration of aerosols into the airways, it

The Influence of Lung Deposition on Clinical Response

Journal of Aerosol Medicine, 2001
Delivery of more drug to the lung may appear to be a desirable goal in the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, since only 10 to 15% of a drug dose administered via a metered dose inhaler (MDI) reaches the lung. However, increasing the dose of most inhaled drugs may only lead to an increase in side effects, since maximal ...

Development of Mouse Lung Deposition Models

2015
Abstract : Mathematical models were developed to predict deposition of inhaled particles in the lungs of two strains of mice. The deposition model included an algorithm to calculate particle inhalability. Model predictions included filtering capabilities in the nasal passages, and deposition in various regions of the lung.
