Mechanisms of Inflammation in Lung Tissue
1981Inflammation can be seen as a balance of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory reactions, with pro-inflammatory reactions involved in the initiation and amplification of inflammation via mediators (chemotactic and vasopermeability factors) and tissue injury (by loss of cell function and death).

Lung Mechanics in Pulmonary Edema
Clinics in Chest Medicine, 1985Pulmonary edema can cause alterations in lung mechanics that directly contribute to clinical morbidity and mortality rates. Both the location of the edema fluid (interstitital versus alveolar pulmonary edema) and the etiology of the pulmonary edema contribute to the severity and type of abnormalities of lung mechanics observed.

The Mechanism of the “Lung Lesion” in Shock
1972The pulmonary insufficiency often associated with various forms of shock has attracted considerable attention only recently. Its incidence in critically injured patients from our highways and the battlefields of Southeast Asia has spurred considerable speculation and research.

With mathematical and computational models furthering our understanding of lung mechanics, function and disease, this book provides an all-inclusive introduction to the topic from a quantitative standpoint. Focusing on inverse modeling, the reader is guided through the theory in a logical progression, from the simplest models up to state-of-the-art ...

Mechanical Ventilation and Lung Mechanics
1999Classical studies by von Neergaard in 1929 and Radford and co-workers in the early 1960’s showed in experiments with liquid- and air-filled lungs that surface forces are responsible for a large part of the elastic recoil pressure of the lungs [1, 2]. Concepts which may form the basis for the interpretation of elastic pressure-volume (Pel-V) curves in ...

Mechanics of the Lung in the 20th Century
Comprehensive Physiology, 2011Abstract Major advances in respiratory mechanics occurred primarily in the latter half of the 20th century, and this is when much of our current understanding was secured. The earliest and ancient investigations involving respiratory physiology and mechanics were frequently done in conjunction with other ...

Defense Mechanisms in the Bovine Lung
Veterinary Clinics of North America: Food Animal Practice, 1985The purpose of this article is to examine factors contributing to defense of the bovine lung from microbial infection. Appropriate physical, cellular, and secretory defense components are assessed. Attention is paid to the thin line separating host-mediated defense from host-mediated injury of the lung.

A Mechanical Heart-Lung Apparatus
IBM Journal of Research and Development, 1957An apparatus is described for taking over the functions of the human heart and lungs for short periods of time to permit a surgeon to perform certain open-heart surgical procedures in a blood-free field. This equipment is capable of receiving venous blood from the patient, removing excess carbon dioxide and restoring the proper oxygen content, and ...
