Abstract Background and purpose For postoperative breast cancer patients, deformable image registration (DIR) is challenged due to the large deformations and non‐correspondence caused by tumor resection and clip insertion. To deal with it, three metrics (fiducial‐, region‐, and intensity‐based) were jointly used in DIR algorithm for improved accuracy ...

Quantifying lung aeration in neonatal lambs at birth using lung ultrasound
BackgroundLung ultrasound (LUS) is a safe and non-invasive tool that can potentially assess regional lung aeration in newborn infants and reduce the need for X-ray imaging.

Entropy Production and the Pressure-Volume Curve of the Lung [PDF]
We investigate analytically the production of entropy during a breathing cycle in healthy and diseased lungs. First, we calculate entropy production in healthy lungs by applying the laws of thermodynamics to the well-known transpulmonary pressure-volume ($P-V$) curves of the lung under the assumption that lung tissue behaves as an entropy spring-like ...

Influence of lung physical properties on its flow--volume curves using a detailed multi-scale mathematical model of the lung [PDF]
We develop a mathematical model of the lung that can estimate independently the air flows and pressures in the upper bronchi. It accounts for the lung multi-scale properties and for the air-tissue interactions. The model equations are solved using the Discrete Fourier Transform, which allows quasi instantaneous solving, in the limit of the model ...

Low‐density lipoprotein receptor‐related protein 6 (LRP6) is a key receptor for the Wnt antagonist Dickkopf1 (DKK1). DKK1 protein expression is induced in a bleomycin (BLM)‐induced lung injury model. We show that DKK1 induces proinflammatory and profibrotic genes in lung fibroblasts.

Abstract Purpose Treatment planning for head‐and‐neck (H&N) cancer, in particular oropharynx, nasopharynx, and paranasal sinus cases, at our center requires noncoplanar proton beams due to the complexity of the anatomy and target location. Targeting accuracy for all beams is carefully evaluated by using image guidance before delivering proton beam ...

Defining of the Relationship Between Lung Volumes, Airway Resistance and the Apnea-Hypopnea Index
Objective: Obstructive Sleep Apnea syndrome (OSAS) is characterized by recurrent complete or partial narrowing of the upper respiratory tract during sleep and frequently a decrease in blood oxygen saturation. Upper respiratory tract gap is determined by

It is well known that the methods actually used to track thoraco-abdominal volume displacement have several limitations. This review evaluates the clinical usefulness of measuring chest wall kinematics by optoelectronic plethysmography [OEP].

Lung volume measurements [PDF]
To the Editor: I read with interest the impressive paper by Cazzola et al. 1 in a recent issue of the European Respiratory Journal . However, I felt somewhat uneasy reading the recommendations on lung volume measurements, i.e. closing circuit dilution …

Urine is a rich source of biomarkers for cancer detection. Tumor‐derived material is released into the bloodstream and transported to the urine. Urine can easily be collected from individuals, allowing non‐invasive cancer detection. This review discusses the rationale behind urine‐based cancer detection and its potential for cancer diagnostics ...
