Growth rates of Lutjanidae (snappers) in tropical Australian waters

Growth rates of three commercial species of Lutjanidae were estimated from sections of vertebrae cross‐checked with scales. The von Bertalanffy growth constants for Lutjanus malabaricus were K=0.168, L∞=70.7 cm standard length (S.L.). For Pristipomoides multidens these were K= 0.219, L∞= 59.1cm, and for Pristipomoides typus K=0.254, L∞= 51.5 cm. Length/

Molecular protocol for authentication of snappers (Lutjanidae-Perciformes) based on multiplex PCR

Fraud involving fish products is regularly reported and investigated using genetic methods. However, no such approach has been applied to snappers, despite the commercial relevance of these fish. This study proposes an authentication protocol with multiplex PCR for three species of snappers (Lutjanus purpureus, L. synagris, and Ocyurus chrysurus).

A New Species of Paracaesio (Pisces: Lutjanidae) from the Fiji Islands

A new species of deep water lutjanid, Paracaesio stonei, is described from 2 specimens caught in Fiji waters at a depth of 220 m. The new species is distinctly different from Paracaesio kusakarii and Paracaesio gonzalesi which also occur in Fiji waters.

The caudal musculature of Hoplopagrus comprises dorsal and ventral superficial flexors reinforced by a deltoid flexor tendon, dorsal and ventral deep flexors a hypochordal longitudinal muscle, a dorsal adductor, and interradials. These provide for flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, rotation, and probably circumduction of fin rays.

This paper presents a tentative estimate of the parameters L8 and K of the von Bertalanffy growth function, and an estimate of total mortality derived from the analysis, using the ELEFAN I and II programs, of length-frequency data on the snapper Etelis carbunculus (Lutjanidae) collected on seamounts of the Kingdom of Tonga, South Pacific.
