Connectivity between coastal habitats of two oceanic Caribbean islands as inferred from ontogenetic shifts by coral reef fishes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Mangroves and seagrass beds are considered important nursery habitats for juveniles of coral reef fishes. Studies have mostly focused on the fish community of just one habitat, so the connectivity between different coastal habitats is often unclear.

Potential Response of Coral Reef’s Functional Structure and Snapper Abundance to Environmental Degradation in San Andres Island, Colombia

open access: yesActa Biológica Colombiana, 2019
To determine the coral reef morpho-functional structure of San Andrés, regarding functional benthic diversity and fish (Lutjanidae), we evaluated the condition of the coral structure on the leeward side of the island, which is an area impacted by tourism,

Molecular delimitation methods validate morphologically similar species of red snappers (Perciformes: Lutjanidae)

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, 2023
In this study, we tested the taxonomic validation of red snappers species (Southern red snapper Lutjanus purpureus; Silk snapper L. vivanus; Blackfin snapper L. buccanella; and Pacific red snapper L. peru) based on comparative analysis, using four methods for species delimitation.

Gillnet selectivity for the spotted rose snapper (Lutjanus guttatus) and the amarillo snapper (Lutjanus argentiventris) in Navidad Bay, Jalisco, Mexico

open access: yesCiencias Marinas, 1999
Gillnet selectivity for Lutjanus guttatus and L. argentiventris in Navidad Bay, Jalisco (Mexico), was estimated using monthly samples. Gillnets of 7.62- and 8.89-cm mesh size were used for the experimental design; 475 organisms of L.

Complete mitochondrial genome of brownstripe red snapper, Lutjanus vitta (Perciformes: Lutjanidae) [PDF]

open access: yesMitochondrial DNA Part B, 2018
The complete mitochondrial genome of the brownstripe red snapper, Lutjanus vitta was determined by MiSeq sequencing platform. The mitogenome of L. vitta (16,498 bp) encoded the typical 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, two rRNA genes, and two non-coding regions (origin of light strand replication; OL and D-Loop control region; CR).

Reconstructing Early Human Subsistence in Near Oceania: New Insights From Matenkupkum and Matenbek

open access: yesInternational Journal of Osteoarchaeology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The colonization of New Ireland ~44–40,000 years ago represents the earliest evidence of human occupation in Near Oceania. Yet, the precise impacts of climatic changes on subsistence strategies during the Late Pleistocene, Last Glacial Maximum, and Holocene remain poorly understood.

The paradox of mosquito net fishing: Complex socio‐ecological trade‐offs in southwestern Madagascar

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Small‐scale fisheries are vital for the livelihoods, nutrition and well‐being of millions of people in coastal regions. In many parts of the Global South, rising poverty, limited alternatives and declining resources have driven the spread of mosquito net fishing (MNF), a non‐selective practice using repurposed health‐distributed nets.

Temporal and Spatial Distribution of Finfish Bycatch in the U.S. Atlantic Bottom Longline Shark Fishery [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Bycatch in U.S. fisheries has become an increasingly important issue to both fisheries managers and the public, owing to the wide range of marine resources that can be involved. From 2002 to 2006, the Commercial Shark Fishery Observer Program (CSFOP) and

Distribution and sighting frequency of reef fishes in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
This study analyzed species richness, distribution, and sighting frequency of selected reef fishes to describe species assemblage composition, abundance, and spatial distribution patterns among sites and regions (Upper Keys, Middle Keys, Lower Keys, and ...

Assessing Risk for Bycatch and Byproduct Species Using a Modified Sustainability Assessment for Fishing Effects (SAFE) Approach

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Central to ecosystem‐based fisheries management is ensuring the sustainability of bycatch and byproduct species. However, the sustainability of these species is difficult to assess as the lack of information limits the use of traditional stock assessment methods.
