Lutzomyia longipalpis (Sand Fly)

Description of the Female of Lutzomyia (Lutzomyia) Dispar, with a Redescription of the Male (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae)

The female of Lutzomyia (Lutzomyia) dispar is described and the male redescribed from specimens laken at Camapua, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil. One pair was collected in copula. The females of L. dispar bite man avidly when given the opportunity to do so and also attack horses and dogs.

New state records for Lutzomyia shannoni and Lutzomyia vexator.

Two species of phlebotomine sand flies, Lutzomyia shannoni (Dyar) and Lutzomyia vexator (Coquillett), are reported for the first time from Kentucky and Ohio. L. vexator also is reported for the first time from Tennessee. These insects were found in a northeasterly band extending from southwestern Kentucky to southwestern Ohio.

Lutzomyia França is the largest and most diverse sand fly genus in the New World and contains all the species involved in the transmission of American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL). Morphological characters were used to test the monophyly and to infer phylogenetic relationships among members of the Lutzomyia subgenus.
