[Axillary lymph node excision in breast cancer].

We report on 264 patients with operable breast cancer, treated between 1980 and 1984 at the First Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Vienna. The operation was in all cases a modified radical mastectomy. The patients were randomized in two groups.

[Axillary band contractures after axillary lymph node excision].

Three patients are described who developed painful bands across the axilla which severely restricted shoulder abduction after breast surgery and axillary lymph-node dissection. They were treated by transection of the bands with excellent results in two of the three patients.

Lymph node involvement is the major prognostic factor in gastric carcinoma. The benefit of extended regional lymph node dissection D2 is still controversial. For Japanese, these dissection can improve significantly long-term survival, while in western countries discussion is still open.
