This work illuminates the essential role of epithelial ATG5 in defending against P. aeruginosa. Atg5 deficiency impairs bacterial clearance and aggravates inflammation via AKT/PI3K/NF‐κB, inflammasome activation, and pyroptosis. Mechanistically, impaired mitophagy intensifies mitochondrial damage.

The Promising Viral Threat to Bacterial Resistance: The Uncertain Patentability of Phage Therapeutics and the Necessity of Alternative Incentives [PDF]
Bacteriophages, or “phages,” are a category of highly adept and adaptable viruses that can infect and kill bacteria. With concerns over the burgeoning antibiotic-resistance crisis looming in recent years, scientists and policymakers have expressed a ...

Characterization of a Novel Thermobifida fusca Bacteriophage P318
Thermobifida fusca is of biotechnological interest due to its ability to produce an array of plant cell wall hydrolytic enzymes. Nonetheless, only one T. fusca bacteriophage with genome information has been reported to date.

Improving the solubility of single domain antibodies using VH‐like hallmark residues
Abstract Single domain antibodies (sdAbs) can be generated from variable regions of heavy‐chain antibodies, which lack light chain and CH1 region. They have attracted attention due to their small size and molecular characteristics. Hydrophilic hallmark amino acids at framework region 2 (FR2) are key residues involved in the solubility of sdAbs ...

The influence of the accessory genome on bacterial pathogen evolution [PDF]
Bacterial pathogens exhibit significant variation in their genomic content of virulence factors. This reflects the abundance of strategies pathogens evolved to infect host organisms by suppressing host immunity.

Autoregulation ensures vertical transmission of the linear prophage GIL01
Betatectiviruses are prophages consisting of linear extrachromosomal genomes without obvious plasmid modules. It remains unclear how betatectiviruses are maintained in low-copy numbers in host cells and how they are vertically transmitted. Phage GIL01 is

Targeted genome mining identified thermostable enzymes (PETases) that hydrolyze the commonly used plastic polymer polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Thermostable enzymes are identified from thermophilic microbial sources. Experimental results reveal enzymatic activity on authentic PET films, highlighting potential for industrial application.

Giant number fluctuations in microbial ecologies
Statistical fluctuations in population sizes of microbes may be quite large depending on the nature of their underlying stochastic dynamics. For example, the variance of the population size of a microbe undergoing a pure birth process with unlimited ...

A Bacterial Sulfotransferase Catalyzes an Unusual Di‐Sulfation in Natural Products Biosynthesis
Herein, a unique sulfotransferase, AdpST, is identified from the adp biosynthetic gene clusters (BGC) in Streptomyces davaonensis DSM101723 and demonstrates that AdpST possesses di‐sulfation activity, which is unprecedented for bacterial phosphoadenosine‐5’‐phosphosulfate (PAPS)‐dependent sulfotransferases. It is further shown that the adp BGC contains
