How do you solve a problem like Maria? The politics of disaster response in Puerto Rico, Florida and Texas. [PDF]

open access: yesWorld Med Health Policy, 2022
Abstract COVID‐19 is not the first, nor the last, public health challenge the US political system has faced. Understanding drivers of governmental responses to public health emergencies is important for policy decision‐making, planning, health and social outcomes, and advocacy.

How stable are visions for protected area management? Stakeholder perspectives before and during a pandemic

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 4, Issue 2, Page 445-461, April 2022., 2022
Abstract Envisioning processes enable protected area managers to chart a course for future management to reach desired goals, but unexpected changes that could affect future visions are not usually considered. The global COVID‐19 pandemic provided an opportunity to explore changes in stakeholder visions, the values that underpin the visions, and their ...

Estimating canopy fuel load with hemispherical photographs: A rapid method for opportunistic fuel documentation with smartphones

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 12, Issue 11, Page 2101-2108, November 2021., 2021
Abstract Canopy fuel load (CFL) affects wildfire intensity and is a critical input for fire behaviour models; however, measuring CFL in the field is time‐consuming and costly. Until recently, hemispherical photographs have been unable to adequately describe canopy metrics in non‐diffuse light conditions.

Small instream infrastructure: Comparative methods and evidence of environmental and ecological responses

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 1, Issue 2, December 2020., 2020
We reviewed evidence on environmental and ecological responses to dams, weirs, and culverts, finding that most studies (78% of 87) evaluated dams or weirs, and that more than half of all evaluations reported negative environmental or ecological responses to the three types of infrastructure. Abstract 1.

Immediate and long‐term impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on delivery of surgical services

open access: yesBJS (British Journal of Surgery), Volume 107, Issue 10, Page 1250-1261, September 2020., 2020
Surgical services are adapting to mitigate the surge in patients with COVID‐19 in need of critical care support. All non‐essential elective surgery has been cancelled, or is pending cancellation, in healthcare systems around the globe, impacting millions of patients.

Applying science to pressing conservation needs for penguins

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 34, Issue 1, Page 103-112, February 2020., 2020
Abstract More than half of the world's 18 penguin species are declining. We, the Steering Committee of the International Union for Conservation of Nature Species Survival Commission Penguin Specialist Group, determined that the penguin species in most critical need of conservation action are African penguin (Spheniscus demersus), Galápagos penguin ...

Integrating Urban Expansion and Flood Risk: A Spatial Assessment of Impervious Surface Growth and Floodplain Exposure in Mecklenburg County (2011–2021)

open access: yesWorld Water Policy, Volume 12, Issue 1, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Urban expansion significantly impacts flood risk, particularly in rapidly growing areas where impervious surfaces exacerbate surface runoff. This study examines spatial patterns of urban growth and their effects on flood exposure in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, from 2011 to 2021.

Indigenous peoples and local community reports of climate change impacts on biodiversity

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 40, Issue 1, February 2026.
Abstract Climate change impacts on biodiversity have been primarily studied through ecological research methods, largely ignoring other knowledge systems. Indigenous and local knowledge systems include rich observations of changes in biodiversity that can inform climate change adaptation planning and environmental stewardship.

Mapping area of habitat for inland wetland species

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 40, Issue 1, February 2026.
Abstract Area of habitat (AOH) maps provide a high‐resolution representation of the habitat available in a species’ range and can support conservation policy and planning processes. However, until recently, there was insufficient knowledge on the distribution of inland wetlands and freshwater biodiversity to develop AOH mapping methods specifically ...

Six Common Mistakes in Conservation Priority Setting

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 27, Issue 3, Page 480-485, June 2013., 2013
Abstract A vast number of prioritization schemes have been developed to help conservation navigate tough decisions about the allocation of finite resources. However, the application of quantitative approaches to setting priorities in conservation frequently includes mistakes that can undermine their authors’ intention to be more rigorous and scientific
