Habitat dynamics of flagship species for conservation prioritization in southern Europe

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 4, August 2025.
Abstract Biodiversity loss is accelerating due to human actions, and decision‐making for conservation needs to be streamlined. Ex situ biodiversity modeling and monitoring based on satellite time‐series data could be an affordable and cost‐efficient tool for improving the prioritization of conservation areas.

Integrating local ecological knowledge into systematic conservation planning for seahorse conservation

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 3, June 2025.
Abstract Successful long‐term conservation relies on strategic planning for pragmatic actions to mitigate threats. Prioritizing actions and areas to support conservation goals in the most cost‐effective scenario becomes crucial in resource‐limited environments. However, planning and management can be challenging in data‐limited contexts.

Social science integration at state and federal fish and wildlife organizations in the United States

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 2, April 2025.
Abstract Increasingly, conservation professionals and scholars recognize the need for more holistic integration of social science in fish and wildlife management. This call is often framed around the complexity of 21st century conservation challenges and changing societal values toward fish and wildlife and its management.

Implementation of clinical breast examination screening programme as part of primary care in Vietnam: An analysis of contextual factors

open access: yesWorld Medical &Health Policy, Volume 17, Issue 1, Page 90-107, March 2025.
Abstract Clinical breast examination (CBE) screening for breast cancer in Vietnam was proved to be cost‐effective and acceptable to women. However, the outcomes of the implementation of such proposed programme are unknown. To inform the design and implementation planning of the proposed screening programme, this study investigated and analysed the ...

Landscape‐scale predictions of future grassland conversion to cropland or development

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 1, February 2025.
Abstract Grassland conservation planning often focuses on high‐risk landscapes, but many grassland conversion models are not designed to optimize conservation planning because they lack multidimensional risk assessments and are misaligned with ecological and conservation delivery scales.

Shifting perceptions of green and blue spaces during the COVID‐19 pandemic in gentrifying neighbourhoods: Experiences of inclusion and exclusion by women and non‐binary residents

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 6, Issue 6, Page 2494-2513, December 2024.
Abstract The COVID‐19 outbreak triggered a combined health, social and economic crisis, imposing multiple restrictions that altered the use and perception of public green and blue spaces (PGBS). In this article, we explored how the different stages of the COVID‐19 pandemic restrictions affected the use and perceptions of public greenspaces and seafront

Explore before you restore: Incorporating complex systems thinking in ecosystem restoration

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 5, Page 922-939, May 2024.
By illustrating how key Complex Systems Science (CSS) concepts linked to non‐linear threshold behaviour can impact restoration outcomes through influencing recovery trajectories, our framework Explore Before You Restore demonstrates the need to incorporate Complex Systems thinking in ecosystem restoration. We argue that inclusion of CSS assessment into

Connectivity conservation planning through deep reinforcement learning

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 4, Page 779-790, April 2024.
Abstract The United Nations has declared 2021–2030 the decade on ecosystem restoration with the aim of preventing, stopping and reversing the degradation of the ecosystems of the world, often caused by the fragmentation of natural landscapes. Human activities separate and surround habitats, making them too small to sustain viable animal populations or ...
