Occurrence, ecology and management of Fascioloides magna in Bavaria, southern Germany

open access: yesWildlife Biology, EarlyView.
In 2015, red deer infected with American liver fluke were discovered in the Veldenstein Forest area for the first time. This was the first detection of the fluke in a wild deer population in Bavaria. The aim of the study was to determine the American liver fluke prevalence rates in red deer, roe deer and wild boar in the Veldenstein Forest, as well as ...

Functional traits and soil water availability shape competitive interactions in a diploid–polyploid complex

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, EarlyView.
Our study emphasises that the long‐term fate of polyploids largely depends on water availability, with high polyploids having a competitive advantage in arid environments. This ultimately highlights the role of functional traits in shaping the competitive dynamics between cytotypes.

Nowcasting Quarterly GDP Growth During the COVID‐19 Crisis Using a Monthly Activity Indicator*

open access: yesEconomic Record, EarlyView.
What is happening now? The onset of the COVID‐19 crisis in 2020 highlighted the importance of having timely data on the economy to help policy‐makers make more informed decisions. However, the most comprehensive measure of activity, GDP, is published with a long lag, limiting its value to policy‐makers as a measure of the current state of the economy ...

Senescent Macrophages Promote Age‐Related Revascularization Impairment by Increasing Antiangiogenic VEGF‐A165B Expression

open access: yesAging Cell, EarlyView.
The underlying mechanisms of age‐related revascularization impairment are not clear. Our research firstly identified that macrophages were more senescent in the ischemic skeletal muscle of old mice and senescent macrophages could inhibit revascularization.

Aerobic Exercise Restores Hippocampal Neurogenesis and Cognitive Function by Decreasing Microglia Inflammasome Formation Through Irisin/NLRP3 Pathway

open access: yesAging Cell, EarlyView.
Exercise improved PD pathology and memory by reducing microglial inflammation, apoptosis, and the formation of the NLRP3 inflammasome via irisin signaling. Irisin administration partially replicated the beneficial effects of exercise on PD pathology.
