Environmental Microbiology, Volume 27, Issue 8, August 2025.Glycine betaine (GBT), a microbial osmolyte, comprises 1.2% of particulate organic carbon in the secondary chlorophyll maximum of the eastern tropical north Pacific oxygen deficient zone. Transcript profiles reveal Prochlorococcus as a key GBT producer and Pelagibacter (SAR11) as its key consumer, using it to synthesize methionine.
