Comparison of Lagostomus maximus amelogenin gene (AMELX) with other mammals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The aim of this study was to compare the Lagostomus maximus AMEL sequence to assess their similarity with the AMEL genes from other mammals. Previously we reported a sequence of the AMEL gene of Lagostomus maximus which corresponds to the intron 3 of the

Sensory Biology of the Franciscana (Pontoporia blainvillei, Pontoporiidae, Cetartiodactyla): Ontogenetic Modifications of Vibrissae and Vibrissal Crypts

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
The transition of cetaceans from a terrestrial to an aquatic environment involved a crucial sensory adaptation to environments with limited visibility. Vibrissae, important mechanoreceptors, undergo an ontogenetic transformation in odontocetes. This research describes the histomorphology of vibrissae and crypts at different developmental stages ...

Preference for novel faces in male infant monkeys predicts cerebrospinal fluid oxytocin concentrations later in life [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The ability to recognize individuals is a critical skill acquired early in life for group living species. In primates, individual recognition occurs predominantly through face discrimination.

Trace Element Patterns in Juvenile Wild Chimpanzee Dentitions

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Trace elements are used to infer mammalian early‐life diets, environmental toxins, dispersal patterns, stress histories, and weaning ages. Here, we employ laser ablation‐inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS) to reveal elemental patterns in our closest living relatives, chimpanzees.

Brain viral reservoir seeding and neurological metabolic dysregulation in early‐life immunodeficiency virus infection

open access: yesBrain Pathology, EarlyView.
Brain viral reservoirs were undetectable in neonatal SIV during the first 3 days post infection; antiretroviral therapy (ART) at 3 dpi prevented brain reservoir seeding and normalized metabolic function, highlighting the necessity of very early treatment to protect the developing CNS.

Variation in trabecular bone microarchitecture across rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) load‐bearing joints

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Aging of bone density (BV/TV) is regional: Forelimb [left] elements gain bone sporadically (orange) but hind limb elements [right] lose bone globally (blue). Abstract Globally, human population structure is quickly trending older, increasing the prevalence and systemic burden of age‐related skeletal disorders such as osteoporosis.

Paecilomycosis in a Nonhuman Primate (Macaca mulatta) [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinary Pathology, 1977
Focal granulomas caused by fungi in the genus Paecilomyces occurred at subcutaneous and laryngeal sites in a Rhesus monkey. Slight wheezing was noted 8 months before the monkey died. Death was unexpected and was caused by asphyxiation after occlusion of the larynx by a fungal granuloma.

Next generation sequencing (NGS) database for tandem repeats with multiple pattern 2°-shaft multicore string matching

open access: yesGenomics Data, 2016
Next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies have been rapidly applied in biomedical and biological research in recent years. To provide the comprehensive NGS resource for the research, in this paper , we have considered 10 loci/codi/repeats TAGA, TCAT,

Relationships between affiliative social behavior and hair cortisol concentrations in semi-free ranging rhesus monkeys [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Sociality is a fundamental aspect of human behavior and health. One benefit of affiliative social relationships is reduced short-term levels of glucocorticoids (GCs), which are indicative of physiological stress.
