Assessing Thermally Induced Errors of Machine Tools by 3D Length Measurements
CIRP Annals, 2003A new measurement technique is proposed for the assessment of thermally induced errors of machine tools. The basic idea is to measure changes of length by a telescopic double ball bar (TDEB) at multiple locations in the machine's workspace while the machine is thermally excited.

A study of pre-compensation for thermal errors of NC machine tools
International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture, 1997Thermally-induced errors are major contributors to the overall accuracy of machine tools. In this paper, an error pre-compensation system is developed to correct the thermal errors of the spindle and lead screws. A simple gauge 1-D ball array is used to accelerate and simplify the error measurement.
