Gradient droplet distribution promotes spontaneous formation of frost-free zone

open access: yesCommunications Materials, 2022
Preventing the condensation of water is key for anti-icing applications. Here, a macro-ridged surface is found to prevent frost formation either side of each ridge, attributed to a change in water vapor distribution preventing ice bridge formation.

Tribological Properties of Carbon Tool Steel after Plasma Electrolytic Nitrocarburizing

open access: yesJournal of Manufacturing and Materials Processing, 2023
The effect of plasma electrolytic nitrocarburizing on the wear resistance of carbon tool steel in friction couples with hardened steel and lead-tin bronze is considered in order to study the mechanism and type of wear, as well as the influence of ...

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Interplay between circadian and other transcription factors—Implications for cycling transcriptome reprogramming

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This perspective highlights emerging insights into how the circadian transcription factor CLOCK:BMAL1 regulates chromatin architecture, cooperates with other transcription factors, and coordinates enhancer dynamics. We propose an updated framework for how circadian transcription factors operate within dynamic and multifactorial chromatin landscapes ...

Machine consciousness

open access: yesScholarpedia, 2005
The work from several laboratories on the modeling of consciousness is reviewed. This ranges, on one hand, from purely functional models where behavior is important and leads to an attribution of consciousness to, on the other hand, material work closely derived from the information about the anatomy of the brain. At the functional end of the spectrum,

Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

Fundamental Investigation of the Application Behavior and Stabilization Potential of Milling Tools with Structured Flank Faces on the Minor Cutting Edges

open access: yesJournal of Manufacturing and Materials Processing
In milling processes in which material removal is performed periodically from solid material, dynamic effects are generally considered to be responsible for instabilities and subsequent productivity limits.

Study on ultrasonic regulation of the welding performance and defects of 7A52 aluminum alloy plate

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2022
The welding performance and defects of thick aluminum alloy plates with medium and high strength are always a hot research topic. In this study, ultrasonic technology was used to regulate the properties and defects of welded joints of a 7A52 aluminum ...

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...
