EFFECTS OF SELF-FERTILIZATION IN THE GIANT KELP, MACROCYSTIS PYRIFERA
Ecology, 2004The costs of self-fertilization were evaluated for the giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera. Macrocystis, like other kelps, has a biphasic life history in which the dispersal stage is the 1N spore generation. Once spores settle, they grow into sedentary and micro- scopic male or female gametophytes, which produce sperm and eggs.

Photoprotection in the brown alga Macrocystis pyrifera: Evolutionary implications
Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B: Biology, 2011The dissipation of energy as heat is essential for photosynthetic organisms to protect themselves against excess light. We compared Photosystem II florescence changes (non-photochemical quenching, NPQ) in the brown alga Macrocystis pyrifera with that of Ficus sp., a higher plant to examine if the mechanism of heat dissipation (energy-dependent ...

Organization of the Photosynthetic Apparatus in Macrocystis Pyrifera
1987The understanding of the organization and function of the photosynthetic apparatus in Macrocystis, the giant kelp, economically and ecologically the most important algal species in the nearshore marine environment of the California coast (1,2), is a first step toward clarification of the photobiology of this unique alga.

Effects of sediments on the development of Macrocystis pyrifera gametophytes
Marine Biology, 1978Rocky ocean bottoms are covered from time to time with small amounts of fine sediments. This material may interfere with the development of germling stages of Macrocystis pyrifera. Tests were performed by introducing sediments before and after spores were dispersed in culture dishes. 10 mg cm-2 of sediment, enough to occlude the surface, prevents spore

Algal succession in a Macrocystis pyrifera forest
Marine Biology, 1975Algal succession within a subtidal forest of the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera was studied by following colonization and community development on concrete blocks fastened to the bottom. Sets of blocks were placed in the bed at 3-month intervals. Subsequent algal development on each set was followed for over a year. All macroscopic species attached to

New methods for mass culture of Macrocystis pyrifera sporophytes
Aquaculture, 1979Abstract Efforts to establish a kelp bed on the Los Angeles harbor breakwater included mass culture and dispersal of juvenile Macrocystis sporophytes. To reduce costs and to utilize transferable substrate, methods were modified from those previously developed. Expenses for laboratory space, refrigeration, and water filtration were reduced.

Low-molecular-weight compounds in Macrocystis pyrifera, a marine alga
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1967Abstract Small amounts of laminitol, succinic acid, glycerol, taurine, and a number of amino acids could be isolated from Macrocystis pyrifera, a brown alga. Laminitol, a C-methyl inositol, has been found previously in several red and brown algae and appears to be a common constituent in seaweeds.

Morphological and physiological responses of Macrocystis pyrifera to nitrate enrichment
Hydrobiologia, 1984In designing a plant maricultural scheme it is important to assess the effectiveness of artificial nutrification. Plants may respond to artificial nutrification in several ways; e.g.,. through changes in their growth rate, morphology, chemical composition, and nutrient uptake kinetics.
