Life-span of the Fronds of the Giant Kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera

Nature, 1961
THE large brown attached alga, Macrocystis pyrifera, member of a widespread genus, is of considerable importance as the direct and indirect source of food for a large number of near-shore animals; it is also gathered by man, to be used as fertilizer, food additives, and it is processed for certain of its chemical constituents.

Pigment content and photosynthetic rate of the fronds of Macrocystis pyrifera

Marine Biology, 1980
The Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Ag. frond is here described in terms of chlorophyll a, fucoxanthin, chlorophyll c and photosynthetic rate. Pigment concentrations increased back from the apical meristem reaching a maximum after 2 to 3 m. Pigment concentrations were then generally constant throughout most of the length of the frond, finally decreasing ...

Regulation of algal community development in a Macrocystis pyrifera forest

Marine Biology, 1975
The effects of small and large-scale roughness, overstory development, competition for space with sessile animals, and grazing on algal community development in a subtidal Macrocystis pyrifera forest were examined using specially prepared concrete blocks as substrata.

Seasonal Patterns in the Growth of the Giant Kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera

1978
Field surveys revealed seasonal growth changes in the Giant Kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera. Frond counts were used to measure average sporophyte size in the study bed and to follow vegetative growth of a typical plant for about sixteen months. Storm induced wave motions and sea urchin grazing were primary causes of whole plant losses.

Nutrients and Productivity of the Giant Kelp, Macrocystis Pyrifera, in the Nearshore

1976
The growth of giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera was studied by field measurements of nutrients and other water parameters. Gross primary production of the kelp bed at Point Loma, California was calculated at 1.5 moles-O2/m2-day or 14.6 g-C/m2-day. This represents one of the highest measured values of gross primary production.
