Macrocytosis is a relatively common finding in adult patients undergoing blood cell counting. Approximately 10% of patients will have unexplained macrocytosis after laboratory evaluation. Data on the approach to patients with unexplained macrocytosis are limited. To investigate this topic and help delineate an approach to this condition, the records of ...

SUMMARY Nine patients who were treated for psoriasis with hydroxyurea displayed peripheral macrocytosis. Mild megaloblastic changes were also seen in the bone marrow of three patients. One patient receiving hydroxyurea developed mild anaemia, another leukopenia. Macrocytosis did not appear to be secondary to an alteration in serum B12 or folate levels.

Clinical & Laboratory Haematology, 1996
We have identified a 52-year-old woman and her 27-year-old daughter with macrocytosis, normal haemoglobin and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration. Macrocytosis could be demonstrated from the age of 40 and 25 respectively. All blood tests were normal including vitamin B12 and folic acid.

Multiple sclerosis and macrocytosis
Acta Neurologica Scandinavica, 1989Twenty-seven patients with multiple sclerosis had mild but significant macrocytosis when compared with an individually matched neurological control group and the normal laboratory reference range. The cause of the macrocytosis is unknown, but our recent clinical observations implicate a possible disturbance in vitamin B12 metabolism, binding or ...

MACROCYTOSIS OF CHRONIC ALCOHOLISM
The Lancet, 1974Abstract Sixty-three patients regularly drinking more than 80 g. ethanol daily were studied. Macrocytosis was present in 89%, generally unassociated with anaemia. Megaloblastic changes were seen in only a third of the marrow samples and the remainder were normoblastic.

Physiological macrocytosis of pregnancy
Tropical Doctor, 2007In a prospective study of 40 women, mean corpuscular volume (MCV) values in second and third trimesters were compared between women who were iron deficient and those who were iron replete. There was no difference in the two groups. Hence reduced MCV seen in iron deficiency anaemia cannot be relied upon as an effective marker in pregnancy due to ...

Macrocytosis in Patients on Stavudine
Scandinavian Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2001We retrospectively reviewed the effects on the erythrocyte mean corpuscular volume (MCV) of the use of stavudine-including antiretroviral regimens in both zidovudine-naive and zidovudine-experienced HIV-infected patients. Macrocytosis was commonly observed among patients on stavudine-based regimens although the MCV usually stabilized at a lower level ...
