MACROCYTOSIS OF CHRONIC ALCOHOLISM

The Lancet, 1974
Abstract Sixty-three patients regularly drinking more than 80 g. ethanol daily were studied. Macrocytosis was present in 89%, generally unassociated with anaemia. Megaloblastic changes were seen in only a third of the marrow samples and the remainder were normoblastic.

Physiological macrocytosis of pregnancy

Tropical Doctor, 2007
In a prospective study of 40 women, mean corpuscular volume (MCV) values in second and third trimesters were compared between women who were iron deficient and those who were iron replete. There was no difference in the two groups. Hence reduced MCV seen in iron deficiency anaemia cannot be relied upon as an effective marker in pregnancy due to ...

Macrocytosis in Patients on Stavudine

Scandinavian Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2001
We retrospectively reviewed the effects on the erythrocyte mean corpuscular volume (MCV) of the use of stavudine-including antiretroviral regimens in both zidovudine-naive and zidovudine-experienced HIV-infected patients. Macrocytosis was commonly observed among patients on stavudine-based regimens although the MCV usually stabilized at a lower level ...

THE PHYSIOLOGICAL MACROCYTOSIS OF PREGNANCY

BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, 1977
SummarySixty‐four healthy women were followed during normal pregnancies in which they took supplements of iron or iron+folate or an inactive placebo. The red cell size increased in those patients receiving iron alone or iron+folate. The group on the inactive placebo who received no supplemental iron had red cells of constant size and a falling serum ...

Macrocytosis Associated with Anticonvulsant Therapy

Epilepsia, 1970
SUMMARYMacrocytosis in the absence of anaemia has been demonstrated in mentally retarded epileptic patients treated with long‐term anticonvulsant therapy. In patients treated with phenobarbitone, the degree of macrocytosis of the red cells appears to be dose‐related. The significance of these findings in relation to folate absorption, folate metabolism,

HYDROXYUREA AND MACROCYTOSIS

Archives of Dermatology, 1971
To the Editor.— We would like to report the findings of macrocytic changes occurring in the blood of six patients being treated for psoriasis with hydroxyurea. All six patients were in reasonably good health except for severe psoriasis. All patients except one had at least a temporary therapeutic response to hydroxyurea.

Down's syndrome, dementia and macrocytosis

Irish Journal of Psychological Medicine, 2002
AbstractObjective: No definitive peripheral biological marker has yet been found to correlate with Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study investigated the role of macrocytosis as a marker which could significantly improve our understanding of AD in the Down's syndrome (DS) population. Methods: This study investigated the possible association between ...
