Synthesis of Macromolecular Substances by Addition Polymerization

open access: closed, 2001
As already explained, polymerization reactions can proceed by various mechanisms and can be catalyzed by initiators of different kinds. For addition polymerization of single compounds, initiation of chains may occur via radical, cationic, anionic, or so-called coordinative-acting initiators, but some monomers will not polymerize by more than one ...

A new phenomenon in flow birefringence of solutions of macromolecular substances

open access: closedJournal of Polymer Science, 1953
AbstractMeasurements on flow birefringence of solutions of polyvinyl chloride in cyclohexanone revealed that the angle of orientation increases with decreasing concentration of the solution. That this surprising effect was not due to constructional or experimental errors was demonstrated by results obtained with polystyrene, which were in agreement ...

CHROMATOGRAPHIC AND SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC PROPERTIES OF DISSOLVED HUMIC SUBSTANCES COMPARED WITH MACROMOLECULAR POLYMERS

open access: closedSoil Science, 2001
The commonly accepted polymeric nature of humic substances is still a matter of debate. In this work, both humic matter of different origin and undisputed neutral (polysaccharides) and negatively charged (polystyrenesulphonates) polymers of known molecular weight were studied by high performance size exclusion chromatography after dissolution in mobile

Affinity Chromatography of Macromolecular Substances on Adsorbents Bearing Carbohydrate Ligands

open access: closed, 1981
Publisher Summary This chapter provides information on the methods for preparing affinity adsorbents having carbohydrate ligands and illustrates the use of these adsorbents for the purification of representative, macromolecular substances. Affinity chromatography is possible because of the stereospecific interactions that can occur between the ...

Enlargement of the liver and spleen in mice of the O20 (Amsterdam) strain caused by storage of macromolecular substances—I

open access: closedBiochemical Pharmacology, 1962
Mice of the O20 (Amsterdam) strain were intraperitoneally injected with the macromolecular substances dextran and polyvinylpyrrolidone. Quantitative determinations were made of the amounts of these substances stored in the liver and spleen. It appeared that only a very limited amount of the injected quantity of the macromolecular substances was stored.

Imaging of Humic Substance Macromolecular Structures in Water and Soils

Science, 1999
Humic substances (HSs) are the natural organic polyelectrolytes formed from the biochemical weathering of plant and animal remains. Their macromolecular structure and chemistry determine their role in biogeochemical processes. In situ spectromicroscopic evidence showed that the HS macromolecular structures (size and shape) vary as a function of HS ...
