Lymphocyte macrophage interactions: peripolesis of human alveolar macrophages

European Respiratory Journal, 1992
Peripolesis is a phenomenon in which a lymphocyte attaches itself to another cell, usually a macrophage or veiled cell, and proceeds to circle around it. In emperipolesis, a related phenomenon, the lymphocyte invaginates the target cell so deeply that it appears to be intracytoplasmic.

Functional Heterogeneity of Alveolar Macrophages

1981
The alveolar macrophage is the first line of defense against inhaled toxicants, infectious organisms and inert dusts. While much attention has been paid to the mechanisms of activation of peritoneal macrophages, little information is available concerning those of the alveolar macrophage. Alveolar macrophages have been reported to differ from peritoneal

Methylmercury Induces Alveolar Macrophages Apoptosis

International Journal of Toxicology, 2008
Through the use of a scanning electronic microscope, it was found that alveolar macrophages treated with 10 μM of methylmercury for 24 h showed a decrease of surface microvilli, and those treated with 15 μM of methylmercury underwent deformity and subsequent cell death.

The alveolar macrophage

1960
The alveolar macrophages, or dust cells, of the lung are cells which lie free within the air spaces of the lung alveoles. They have been extensively studied in the light microscope [for summary see (1)]. Their phagocytic potentialities are likewise known from light microscopic studies, in which dyes, India ink, or oils were injected into the trachea of
