The Role of Emergent Aquatic Macrophytes in Changing Water Quality at Al-Shafi Marsh, Southern Iraq

open access: yesمجلة مركز بحوث التقنيات الاحيائية, 2009
This study was done at Al-Shafi marsh, southern Iraq, to determine the role of emergent aquatic macrophytes in changing the water quality. Three dominant emergent aquatic macrophytes were identified in the marsh and the vegetation cover percentages for ...

Flooding affects fluctuating asymmetry but not growth of a riparian orbweaving spider

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
In a mesocosm experiment we assessed the impact of flood on aquatic insect emergence and on spider development using geometric morphometric analysis of fluctuating asymmetry. We observed 45% higher emergence in flooded mesocosm throughout the season. Spiders did not grow bigger but exhibited ~15% lower fluctuating asymmetry than in controls.

Disentangling the Drivers of a Piscivorous Intra‐Annual Cohort and the Contributions of Three Cohorts to Early‐Year Class Strength in Pikeperch (Sander lucioperca)

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Using pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) as a model species, we investigated the factors influencing fluctuations in the abundance of piscivorous intra‐annual cohorts and assessed the role of three distinct cohorts: extremely small (ES), ordinary (or mid‐sized) fingerlings, and piscivorous in shaping year‐class strength.

Adsorption of different types of microplastic particles by macrophytes of Lake Baikal

open access: yesActa Biologica Sibirica
Submerged macrophytes are capable of adsorbing microplastic particles on their surface. This can affect the vital activity of plants and associated aquatic communities.

Leaf Soluble Carbohydrates, Free Amino Acids, Starch, Total Phenolics, Carbon and Nitrogen Stoichiometry of 24 Aquatic Macrophyte Species Along Climate Gradients in China

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2019
Leaf soluble carbohydrates (SC), free amino acids (FAA), starch, total phenolics (TOPH), carbon (C), and nitrogen (N) stoichiometry of 24 aquatic macrophyte species were studied at 52 selected sites in eastern, 31 sites in southwestern and 6 sites in ...

Water availability and land‐use shape the diversity of Odonata in the Middle East

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Odonata diversity in the Middle East depends on the availability of long‐lasting waters, emphasizing the importance of preserving stable aquatic habitats for biodiversity conservation under climate change‐driven droughts. Agricultural expansion is associated with increased Odonata species richness, but overall trait diversity remains limited ...

Amazonian drought of 2023: Environmental conditions relevant to fishes

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract This paper provides a platform for the following studies within this Special Issue. ‘Ecophysiology of fishes in the two great tributaries of the Amazon in the Anthropocene’. It documents the water quality conditions and accompanying zooplankton community structure and biomass relative to fish health in the Rio Negro and Rio Solimões during the

Submerged Macrophytes Exhibit Different Phosphorus Stoichiometric Homeostasis

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2018
Phosphorus (P) is a limiting element in many aquatic ecosystems. Excessive P input often leads to cyanobacterial bloom, thus triggering ecological imbalances and a series of environmental problems.

Aspects of the Histopathology of Clarias gariepinus Infected With the Camallanid Parasite Procamallanus (Procamallanus) pseudolaeviconchus Moravec and Van As, 2015

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Histopathological studies of infections with the nematode Procamallanus (Procamallanus) pseudolaeviconchus Moravec and Van As, 2015, an intestinal parasite of Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822), are scarce. The current study describes histopathological changes in the stomach of C. gariepinus infected with P.

Oxygen demand during mineralization of aquatic macrophytes from an oxbow lake

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology
This study presents a kinetic model of oxygen consumption during aerobic decomposition of detritus from seven species of aquatic macrophytes: Cabomba furcata, Cyperus giganteus, Egeria najas, Eichhornia azurea, Salvinia auriculata, Oxycaryum cubense and ...
