Clinical and radiological findings in macroprolactinemia [PDF]

open access: possibleEndocrine, 2011
Hyperprolactinemia is the most common abnormality of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical and radiological features of patients with macroprolactinemia. The study population consisted of patients with elevated serum prolactin (PRL) concentrations who presented to our Endocrinology outpatient clinic ...

Optimization of a Screening Method for Macroprolactinemia

Journal of Chromatography B, 2021
To optimize a screening method for macroprolactinemia and improve the accuracy of free prolactin (freePRL) detection.Overall efficiency, calculated as the product of the immunoglobulin G (IgG) precipitation rate and the freePRL recovery rate were employed to determine the concentration of the precipitant polyethylene glycol (PEG).

Macroprolactinemia: The Consequences of a Laboratory Pitfall

Endocrine, 2003
The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of macroprolactin, a macromolecule with reduced bioactivity, in hyperprolactinemic patients. Prolactin was measured before and after precipitation of macroprolactin by polyethylene glycol in 306 patients. Only patients with prolactin values >700 mIU/L (n = 270) entered the study.

Prevalence and reproductive manifestations of macroprolactinemia

Endocrine, 2018
Macroprolactinemia is characterized by predominance of macroprolactin molecules in circulation and generally has extra-pituitary origin. Macroprolactin is viewed as biologically inactive, therefore asymptomatic, and thus may not require any treatment or prolonged follow-up.

Macroprolactinemia in hyperprolactinemic infertile women

Endocrine, 2013
Hyperprolactinemia occurs in 15-20 % of women with menstrual disturbances and 30-40 % of infertile women and it can adversely affect the fertility. High molecular weight prolactin (macroprolactin) has long been known in hyperprolactinemic fertile women.

The Effect of Macroprolactinemia on Gonadotropin Secretion

The Endocrinologist, 2007
Objectives: Hyperprolactinemia due to monomeric prolactin (m-PRL), is associated with suppression of gonadotropin secretion and gonadal activity. Macroprolactin is thought to be a biologically inactive form of prolactin that has no effects on gonadotropin secretion.

MACROPROLACTINEMIA: CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE AND CHARACTERIZATION OF THE CONDITION

Acta Clinica Belgica, 2005
The purpose of this study was to characterize the clinical picture of macroprolactinemic patients and to further assess whether macroprolactinemia was part of an auto-immune syndrome. Eighty-two hyperprolactinemic (serum PRL > 1000 mU/l) patients were investigated and the PEG precipitation test identified 14 patients with macroprolactinemia (bb PRL ...

Macroprolactinemia in a Patient with Infertility and Hyperprolactinemia

Southern Medical Journal, 2006
A significant number of patients with hyperprolactinemia have macroprolactinemia, a condition characterized by the preponderance of big-big prolactin with normal levels of free prolactin. As macroprolactin does not have biologic activity, such patients do not require further investigations or treatment for hyperprolactinemia. The case of a patient with

Macroprolactinemia in Childhood and Adolescence: A Cause of Asymptomatic Hyperprolactinemia

Hormone Research in Paediatrics, 2000
Asymptomatic hyperprolactinemias associated with altered proportions of molecular forms of circulating prolactin (PRL) have been reported in adults. The scarce references available in children and adolescents prompted us to report our experience in the evaluation and follow-up of patients with macroprolactinemia.
