Macrorhabdus ornithogaster (Megabacterium) Infection in Adult Hobby Chickens in North America

open access: yesAvian Diseases, 2011
A field investigation was conducted on a flock of adult hobby chickens showing intermittent signs of enteritis. Roosters examined in the initial field visit and postmortem had cecal worms, roundworms, tetratrichomonads, and coccidiosis. Macrorhabdus ornithogaster was diagnosed histologically in the mucosal isthmus of the proventriculus and ventriculus.

Growth and Metabolic Characterization of Macrorhabdus Ornithogaster

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation, 2007
Macrorhabdus ornithogaster ( M. ornithogaster) is an anamorphic ascomycetous yeast found only in the stomach of birds. Infection is often benign but has also been associated with disease in some species of birds under some circumstances. In vitro efforts to grow M. ornithogaster have been largely unsuccessful.

Comparison of In-Clinic Diagnostic Testing Methods for Macrorhabdus ornithogaster

Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery, 2021
Macrorhabdus ornithogaster is an ascomycete yeast often found at the isthmus of the ventriculus and proventriculus of infected birds. Antemortem diagnosis has traditionally involved direct visualization of organisms on wet-mount or gram-stained fecal preparations, cloacal and crop swabs, or by both methods; however, different in-clinic diagnostic ...

Occurrence of Macrorhabdus ornithogaster in exotic birds

Polish Journal of Veterinary Sciences
Avian gastric yeast ( Macrorhabdus ornithogaster) is a microorganism that infects aviary birds worldwide, both captive and wild. A total number of 352 birds, belonging to 18 avian species, were examined from 2019 to 2022 for M. ornithogaster, using fecal smears of live birds or cytological samples of the proventriculus taken at necropsy.

Phylogenetic evaluation of Macrorhabdus ornithogaster isolated from a case of canary (Serinus canaria)

Comparative Clinical Pathology, 2018
Two dead birds from a flock of domestic canaries (Serinus canaria) were referred with a history of anorexia, weight loss, abdominal distension, and occasional mortality. A slightly enlarged liver and proventriculus were seen on the examination of the abdominal cavity.

Avian Gastric Yeast (Macrorhabdus ornithogaster) and Mycobacterium genavense Infections in a Zoo Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) Flock

Avian Diseases, 2020
Over a 4-mo period, a Michigan zoo had 32 budgerigars, Melopsittacus undulatus, from their flock die. Whole animals or formalin-fixed tissues were submitted to Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for diagnosis. Avian gastric yeast infection, Macrorhabdus ornithogaster, was diagnosed in seven birds.
