Quantitative Metabarcoding Reveals the Effects of Ecological Factors and Invasive Species on Functional Diversity of Freshwater Insects

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 35, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Aquatic insects are the most biodiverse freshwater animals. DNA metabarcoding data are increasingly used to assess variation in insect communities, but they are rarely integrated with information on the abundance or biomass of different taxa that can provide key insights into their functional responses.

Tizenhárom faunára új árvaszúnyogfaj (Diptera: Chironomidae) a Tiszából | Thirteen new non-biting midge (Diptera: Chironomidae) species in the Hungarian fauna from the River Tisza [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
2003-ban árvaszúnyogbábokat és -bábbõröket gyûjtöttünk a Felsõ- Tisza keresztszelvényében, Lónya és Tiszamogyorós között. A talált fajok közül 13 (Chernovskiia sp., Chironomus (Lobochironomus) dorsalis, Cryptotendipes pseudotener, Cyphomella sp ...

Subsurface sediment properties and potential impacts of marine sand extraction on sand wave occurrence on the Netherlands Continental Shelf

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 50, Issue 15, December 2025.
This study reveals that a deeper sediment layer on the Netherlands Continental Shelf, which is exposed due to sand extraction, is generally finer and muddier than the previous surface layer. Additionally, the exposure of this layer will generally lead to a reduced occurrence of sand waves.

Long‐term changes in intra‐ and interspecific trait variability of a small herbivore in a deep perialpine lake

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 70, Issue 11, Page 3386-3400, November 2025.
Abstract Analyses of trait dynamics provide new insights into the dynamics of communities and ecosystems. While zooplankton traits—and especially the defensive traits—of zooplankton are well studied in the laboratory, there are hardly any studies analyzing long‐term dynamics of zooplankton traits.

The Paleosalinity Context for the Ecological Pattern of the Chengjiang Biota

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 19, 16 October 2025.
Abstract The Chengjiang biota provides critical insights into metazoan diversification during the Cambrian Explosion, preserved at multiple localities with varying fossil abundances across the Chengjiang Bay. This work reports new B/Ga and B/K data from three drill cores near fossil localities, to evaluate salinity influences on ecological distribution
