210Pb and compositional data of sediments from Rondonian lakes, Madeira River basin, Brazil

Applied Radiation and Isotopes, 2015
Gold exploration has been intensive in Brazilian Amazon over the last 40 years, where the use of mercury as an amalgam has caused abnormal Hg concentrations in water bodies. Special attention has been directed to Madeira River due to fact it is a major tributary of Amazon River and that since 1986, gold exploration has been officially permitted along a

Nature-based solutions for improving navigation reliability on the Madeira River, Brazil

Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management, 2021
Abstract The Madeira River Navigation and Improvement Project provides a unique opportunity to incorporate nature-based solutions (NbS) into the built environment to promote sustainable communities and water resources infrastructure. The Madeira River has no major physical interventions (river training structures, navigation locks and ...

Extreme rainfall events in Amazonia: The Madeira river basin

Remote Sensing Applications: Society and Environment, 2020
Abstract Monitoring and understanding the behavior of precipitation is a major challenge of the hydrological cycle and a key issue with respect to the corresponding impact and assessment of risk management in watersheds, notably in the Amazon region. This work investigates the frequency of extreme rainfall events in the largest Amazon sub-basin, the ...

Biogeochemistry of the Madeira river basin

GeoJournal, 1989
A biogeochemical characterization of the Madeira river basin has been made to evaluate the local and global effects of possible alterations in the ecosystem caused by recent intensive occupation in Rondonia state. During the period April 1983—January 1986, sampling was made both by land and river along the tributaries and main channel of the Madeira ...

Mercury in the Madeira River ecosystem, Rondônia, Brazil

Forest Ecology and Management, 1991
Abstract A survey of mercury levels in river water and sediments, forest soils, fish, air and human hair is presented for the Madeira River watershed in southwest Amazonia, Brazil. Mercury levels appeared particularly high in tributary rivers close to major gold-mining areas.

Sex-related mercury bioaccumulation in fish from the Madeira River, Amazon

Environmental Research, 2016
Sex plays an important role in the kinetics and dynamics of methylmercury in some animals. Although fish is the main source of mercury exposure to consumers, the role of sex in fish-Hg bioaccumulation is less known. We studied total Hg (THg) concentrations in 2538 samples (males=1052, females=1486) of fish from different trophic levels (herbivorous ...

Total mercury and methylmercury in river dolphins (Cetacea: Iniidae: Inia spp.) in the Madeira River Basin, Western Amazon

Environmental Science and Pollution Research, 2021
In the Amazon, mercury (Hg) contamination comes from ASGM operations along with soil remobilization processes associated with deforestation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) and total mercury (THg) in 88 samples of skin and blubber tissue obtained from live captured river dolphins (Inia boliviensis, Inia ...

Mercury in surface waters of three mine-dominated river systems: Idrija River, Slovenia; Carson River, Nevada; and Madeira River, Brazilian Amazon

Geochemistry: Exploration, Environment, Analysis, 2002
This paper investigates the aqueous geochemistry of mercury (Hg) in three aquatic systems impacted by either past or present mining activities. The Idrija River in Slovenia flows near the Idrija mercury mine, the second largest mercury mine in the world, with continuous mining and smelting activities for five centuries. During this period,

Madeira river complex HVDC system: A dynamic behavior study using PSCAD

2015 IEEE 13th Brazilian Power Electronics Conference and 1st Southern Power Electronics Conference (COBEP/SPEC), 2015
This work aims to present the dynamical study regarding the HVDC link of Madeira river hydroelectric complex, which is composed by Santo Antonio and Jirau hydropower plants located in southeastern Brazil, whose total installed capacity is 6,900 MW. The HVDC system comprises two 3,150-MW bipolar links and two back-to-back stations rated at 400 MW.
