Arc volcanoes are underlain by complex systems of molten‐rock reservoirs ranging from melt‐poor mush zones to melt‐rich magma chambers. Petrological and satellite data indicate that eruptible magma chambers form in the topmost few kilometres of the crust.

Rates of magma transfer in the crust: Insights into magma reservoir recharge and pluton growth [PDF]
Plutons have long been viewed as crystallized remnants of large magma reservoirs, a concept now challenged by high-precision geochronological data coupled with thermal models. Similarly, the classical view of silicic eruptions fed by long-lived magma reservoirs that slowly differentiate between mafic recharges is being questioned by petrological and ...

Magma mobilization by downward-propagating decompression of the Eyjafjallajökull volcanic plumbing system [PDF]
Detailed observations of the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruptions in Iceland show seismic activity propagating vertically through the entire crust during a ten-week period of volcanic unrest comprising multiple eruption episodes.

Two Distinct Magma Storage Regions at Ambrym Volcano Detected by Satellite Geodesy
The flux of eruptible magma into a magmatic plumbing system influences eruption size and timing. If magma transfer is possible between two hydraulically‐connected magma lenses, system destabilization can tap a larger magma volume than stored in any one ...

On depressurization of volcanic magma reservoirs by passive degassing [PDF]
AbstractMany active volcanoes around the world alternate episodes of unrest and mildly explosive eruptions with quiescent periods dominated by abundant but passive gas emissions. These are the so‐called persistently degassing volcanoes, and well‐known examples are Mayon (Philippines) and Etna (Italy).

Massive carbon storage in convergent margins initiated by subduction of limestone
Experiments and buoyancy calculations reveal that subduction of limestone results in massive carbon storage in arc lithosphere, forming an important carbon reservoir in convergent margins.

Our petrochemical studies on ~1.2 Ga granitoids of the Natal Metamorphic Belt, South Africa, do not suggest any property similar to Phanerozoic‐style subduction‐related granitoids. Plot of Kotongweni Tonalite in Y versus Sr diagram (after Moyen 2011), note that most samples have Sr/Y < 50.

Seismic imaging and petrology explain highly explosive eruptions of Merapi Volcano, Indonesia
Our seismic tomographic images characterize, for the first time, spatial and volumetric details of the subvertical magma plumbing system of Merapi Volcano. We present P- and S-wave arrival time data, which were collected in a dense seismic network, known

Resolving Continental Magma Reservoirs With 3D Surface Wave Tomography
Surface wave tomography is widely used to improve our understanding of continental magma reservoirs that may be capable of fueling explosive volcanic eruptions.

Dispersal, source and glass chemistry of a third tephra unit within Iceland's Settlement Layer
Tephra layers may be studied to understand the dynamics and sequence of past explosive volcanism. In Iceland, the distinctive Settlement Layer (AD ~877) underlies almost all archaeological evidence for the Norse Settlement and is preserved in soils across Iceland and as cryptotephra overseas.
