Genome‐wide association and interaction analysis for proliferative retinopathy in adults with type 2 diabetes born during famine: The DOLCE study in Ukraine

open access: yesActa Ophthalmologica, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) is one of the leading causes of blindness in working‐age adults. We have previously shown that the risk of PDR is significantly elevated in individuals with intrauterine exposure to famine. However, the genetic mechanisms mediating this association remain unknown.

Dispersal, source and glass chemistry of a third tephra unit within Iceland's Settlement Layer

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
Tephra layers may be studied to understand the dynamics and sequence of past explosive volcanism. In Iceland, the distinctive Settlement Layer (AD ~877) underlies almost all archaeological evidence for the Norse Settlement and is preserved in soils across Iceland and as cryptotephra overseas.

Thermal Budgets of magma storage constrained by diffusion chronometry: the Cerro Galán ignimbrite

open access: yesJournal of Petrology, 2022
The long-term thermochemical conditions at which large bodies of silicic magma are stored in the crust is integral to our understanding of the timing, frequency, and intensity of volcanic eruptions, and provides important context for interpreting volcano monitoring data.

High Magma Storage Rates Before the 1983 Eruption of Kilauea, Hawaii [PDF]

open access: yesScience, 2000
After a magnitude 7.2 earthquake in 1975 and before the start of the ongoing eruption in 1983, deformation of Kilauea volcano was the most rapid ever recorded. Three-dimensional numerical modeling shows that this deformation is consistent with the dilation of a dike within Kilauea's rift zones coupled with creep over a narrow area of a low-angle fault ...

A three-dimensional study of a crustal low velocity region beneath the 9°03′N overlapping spreading center [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Overlapping spreading centers (OSCs) play a key role in models of magma distribution at fast spreading ridges. To investigate the relationship between ridge-axis discontinuities and magma supply, we conducted a three-dimensional seismic reflection and ...

Sequential Assimilation of Volcanic Monitoring Data to Quantify Eruption Potential: Application to Kerinci Volcano, Sumatra

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2017
Quantifying the eruption potential of a restless volcano requires the ability to model parameters such as overpressure and calculate the host rock stress state as the system evolves.

Multidisciplinary Constraints on Magma Compressibility, the Pre‐Eruptive Exsolved Volatile Fraction, and the H2O/CO2 Molar Ratio for the 2006 Augustine Eruption, Alaska

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, 2021
Geodetically modeled reservoir volume changes during volcanic eruptions are commonly much smaller than the observed eruptive volumes. This discrepancy is thought to be partially due to the compressibility of magma, which is largely controlled by the ...

Heidegger and Levinas on the phenomenology of the hand: Between work and gesture

open access: yesThe Southern Journal of Philosophy, EarlyView.
Abstract This article explores how Heidegger and Levinas develop distinct phenomenological accounts of the hand. Both thinkers refuse to treat the hand as merely an anatomical organ, instead viewing it as an essential dimension of human existence. Yet their interpretations diverge sharply. In the first section, I show how Heidegger grounds the function

Plumbing system dynamics during the 2024 paroxysmal sequence at the Voragine crater of Mt. Etna volcano as revealed by the olivine crystal cargo

open access: yesVolcanica
The sequence of six paroxysmal eruptions that occurred between July and August 2024 at Mt. Etna’s Voragine crater has been investigated in order to constrain the plumbing system dynamics.

Petrological characterisation of magma storage

open access: yes
Magma storage modulates the explosivity, frequency, and impact of volcanic eruptions, and controls the formation of magmatic-hydrothermal mineral deposits. The architecture of magma storage and plumbing systems, and their eruption triggering mechanisms, are inaccessible to direct observation in active volcanoes.
