Crustal Shear‐Wave Velocity and Azimuthal Anisotropy Imaging Reveals the Merapi‐Merbabu‐Telomoyo Volcanic Chain, Central Java

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 18, 28 September 2026.
Abstract We present new results from ambient noise tomography and azimuthal anisotropy analysis of the DOMERAPI data set to investigate crustal structure beneath the Merapi‐Merbabu‐Telomoyo region in central Java. The 3D shear‐wave velocity (Vs) model reveals a prominent high‐Vs anomaly extending from south of Merapi through Merbabu to Telomoyo ...

Understanding silicic volcanism: Constraints from elasticity and failure of vesicular magma [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Volcanic eruptions are one of the most spectacular and dangerous natural phenomena. Volcanic activity can either be effusive, dominated by quiescent emission of lava or explosive, dominated by the eruption of pyroclastic material.

Deep Origin and Shallow Launch for the Etna 122 B.C. Mafic Plinian Eruption

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems
Basaltic Plinian eruptions challenge our understanding of explosive volcanism. The 122 B.C. Plinian eruption of Etna ranks among the most powerful mafic explosive events known. Here, we combine volatile barometry of 122 B.C.

Gas Measurements Reveal Fractional Degassing and Water Interaction During a Flank Eruption of Pacaya Volcano (Guatemala)

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 17, 16 September 2026.
Abstract SO2 flux and gas composition were measured during the 2021 flank eruption of Pacaya Volcano (Guatemala). The SO2 flux, measured with Tropomi, gradually rose from ∼2 to ∼30 kg/s over a 5 month period before the eruption. Field UV camera data showed that >95% of the SO2 was emitted from the summit crater.

Fault‐Controlled Plumbing System Beneath Lipari Volcanic Island Revealed by Seismic Matrix Imaging

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 17, 16 September 2026.
Abstract Lipari Island hosts an active magmatic–hydrothermal system, but its deep plumbing architecture remains poorly resolved due to strong seismic scattering. We apply passive seismic matrix imaging to public vertical‐component cross‐correlation functions from the dense 2018 Lipari nodal array, recovering relative‐reflectivity structures to ∼10 km ...

Plume‐Fed Magmatic Fluids Weakened Crust and Promoted a Large Intraplate Earthquake in Northern Hainan (South China)

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 17, 16 September 2026.
Abstract Large intraplate earthquakes are paradoxical because they occur far from active plate boundaries. Northern Hainan Island (South China) hosts the 1605 Qiongbei M7.5 earthquake within a volcanic province linked to the Hainan mantle plume. New shear‐wave velocity images reveal two shallow low‐velocity zones extending to ∼10 km depth: a stronger ...

Outgassing behaviour during highly explosive basaltic eruptions

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Explosivity of basaltic eruptions is related to the efficiency in which exsolved gas can separate from the melt during ascent, which is controlled by magma permeability.

Characterization of the Plumbing System Beneath Askja Caldera, Iceland, Revealed by Microgravity and Deformation Data During Uplift Between 2022 and 2023

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract In July 2021, an episode of uplift started at Askja caldera, Iceland, following over 50 years of subsidence. The initial inflation rate was approximately 700mm/yr $700\hspace*{.5em}\mathrm{m}\mathrm{m}/\mathrm{y}\mathrm{r}$, declining to 350mm/yr $350\hspace*{.5em}\mathrm{m}\mathrm{m}/\mathrm{y}\mathrm{r}$ within 1 month.

The Distinction Between Sn‐Mineralized and Sn‐Barren Granites in Sn Isotopes

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 27, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Tin mineralization is commonly associated with highly evolved granites. However, not all highly evolved granitic rocks are mineralized with Sn. Comparative studies of Sn‐fertile and Sn‐barren granites can deepen our understanding of the key processes that lead to Sn enrichment in magmatic‐hydrothermal systems.

Building the Andean Crust at ∼35°S: Arc Geochemistry Reveals Cretaceous Thinning and Rapid Neogene Thickening

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Quantification of the timing and mechanisms of crustal thickening in Cordilleran orogenic hinterlands remains challenging. We address this in the Andes using whole‐rock geochemistry and zircon petrochronology from a >70 Myr volcanic record in the Tinguiririca valley of Chile (∼35° ${}^{\circ}$S), which captures a pivotal transition from ...
