Evidence that transverse variability of critical current density can greatly mitigate screening current stress in high field REBCO magnets

open access: yesScientific Reports
Plastic damage of REBCO (REBa2Cu3O7-x, where RE=rare earth) coated conductors by screening current stress (SCS) is a significant concern for ultra-high-field superconducting magnets. Indeed, the third Little Big Coil (LBC3), a REBCO magnet that generated

Non-monotonic pressure dependence of high-field nematicity and magnetism in CeRhIn5

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
Multiple quantum critical behaviors exist in the heavy fermion material CeRhIn5, but their interrelation is less studied. Here, Helm et al. investigate the interrelation of two quantum critical points and other relevant orders, revealing a strongly non ...

YAP1::TFE3 mediates endothelial‐to‐mesenchymal plasticity in epithelioid hemangioendothelioma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The YAP1::TFE3 fusion protein drives endothelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EndMT) plasticity, resulting in the loss of endothelial characteristics and gain of mesenchymal‐like properties, including resistance to anoikis, increased migratory capacity, and loss of contact growth inhibition in endothelial cells.

Origin and stability of generalized Wigner crystallinity in triangular moiré systems

open access: yesnpj Quantum Materials
Generalized Wigner crystals (GWC) on triangular moiré superlattices, formed from stacking two layers of transition metal chalcogenides, have been observed at multiple fractional fillings [Nature 587, 214–218 (2020), Nat. Phys.

Perspective: Magnetic skyrmions—Overview of recent progress in an active research field

open access: yesJournal of Applied Physics, 2018
Within a decade, the field of magnetic skyrmionics has developed from a niche prediction to a huge and active research field. Not only do magnetic skyrmions—magnetic whirls with a unique topology—reveal fundamentally new physics, but they have also risen

In vitro properties of patient serum predict clinical outcome after high dose rate brachytherapy of hepatocellular carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Following high dose rate brachytherapy (HDR‐BT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), patients were classified as responders and nonresponders. Post‐therapy serum induced increased BrdU incorporation and Cyclin E expression of Huh7 and HepG2 cells in nonresponders, but decreased levels in responders.

Single Crystal Growth of URu2Si2 by the Modified Bridgman Technique

open access: yesCrystals, 2016
We describe a modified Bridgman growth technique to produce single crystals of the strongly correlated electron material URu2Si2 and its nonmagnetic analogue ThRu2Si2.

Adaptaquin is selectively toxic to glioma stem cells through disruption of iron and cholesterol metabolism

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Adaptaquin selectively kills glioma stem cells while sparing differentiated brain cells. Transcriptomic and proteomic analyses show Adaptaquin disrupts iron and cholesterol homeostasis, with iron chelation amplifying cytotoxicity via cholesterol depletion, mitochondrial dysfunction, and elevated reactive oxygen species.
